Decibella is a loud talker. A really loud talker. She’s so loud, she’s hurting ears, startling wait staff, disrupting classmates, and annoying moviegoers. She doesn’t realize different environments and situations sometimes demand a softer, quieter voice. That is until a caring teacher introduces her to the silly-sounding word “Slurpadoodle” and the five volumes of voice (Whisper, 6-inch, Table Talk, Strong Speaker, and Outside).

There is both good and evil in this world, and unfortunately, our precious children can be exposed to and experience some very dark and terrible things—nothing any child should have to endure. It's of the utmost importance that our children have a safe haven and that we teach them that they indeed have a voice and can express when they are hurt, scared, or abused. We must take their words and their actions seriously and do all in our power to protect them. Sexual abuse is rampant, and both children and adults need to be able to identify the warning signs and know what to do when faced with that trauma. Even when, and especially when it is someone we know and think we can trust! In this book, you will meet Joetta and her three woodland puppets. Through these puppets and their stories, children will learn what is and what is not appropriate behavior. And what to do if faced with the same situations. They will learn that it's okay to say “NO,” “STOP,” and to use their voice to prevent anyone from touching them or hurting them in any way that makes them uncomfortable.

This is me, this is my story of abuse in the home and how the trauma has impacted my young and adult life. It may not always be easy reading but I believe that, in the end, it is a story about healing and hope. I write about the most intense and horrendous part of my recovery from the many years of sexual and violent abuse I suffered in my childhood, from two family members. For many years I could not look at, or even acknowledge those buried memories, choosing instead to soothe myself with food, alcohol, drugs etc. When I could no longer ignore my trauma and began to feel its full effect, I wanted to take my own life. I wrote the book for my two sons as at this time. I realised if I did not survive they would never know the true story behind my ending. I wanted to acknowledge that just because I am now a specialist worker in Domestic Abuse I have not been immune to living with the trauma of the past, I am also human like any other woman and have a story like many victims of violence. Recovery is not forgetting it happened or shutting it out, it is being brave, being vulnerable and being heard. I hope my story will encourage others to believe that we can heal, we can find our voice. I am the living proof that you can. I hope this book will resonate with other survivors or family member's who have been directly or indirectly impacted by abuse. You are the expert on your own life no one else.Be kind x

“When Barbara Jordan talked, we listened.” —Former President of the United States, Bill Clinton Congresswoman Barbara Jordan had a big, bold, confident voice—and she knew how to use it! Learn all about her amazing career in this illuminating and inspiring picture book biography of the lawyer, educator, politician, and civil rights leader. Even as a child growing up in the Fifth Ward of Houston, Texas, Barbara Jordan stood out for her big, bold, booming, crisp, clear, confident voice. It was a voice that made people sit up, stand up, and take notice. So what do you do with a voice like that? Barbara took her voice to places few African American women had been in the 1960s: first law school, then the Texas state senate, then up to the United States congress. Throughout her career, she persevered through adversity to give voice to the voiceless and to fight for civil rights, equality, and justice. New York Times bestselling author Chris Barton and Caldecott Honoree Ekua Holmes deliver a remarkable picture book biography about a woman whose struggles and mission continue to inspire today.
