Excerpt from Worthy a Crown? And not alone the people, but ted-dee, the Heir Apparent, objected to his Royal Mother's bad taste. For, apart from the scandal - which, being used to scandals, but little affected him his august parent placed on him the Royal functions, without also bestowing the regal guerdon necessary to their proper fulfilment. Consequently, being of an extravagant turn of mind, and fully able to spend six, or even ten times the amount of his income, he had neither time, means, nor inclination to attend to the matters he was thus compelled to look to, and therefore john-nee was cordially detested by his Royal Highness. Excerpt from Eric: Or the Fall of a Crown This story, like a fair Pompeian lamp Its bronze time-eaten and its oil long spent I fill again, remembering how it went Of old in Beauty's hand, through gloom and damp Of prison corridors. Our spirits cramp Too often when in such strict confines bent Too often, at our best, we but revamp Old fabrics, fill old lamps. To this extent, At least, I ask you, bear with such a theme. A royal garment and a royal light I bring you, worthy of no faint esteem If once their meaning strike upon your sight For we ourselves are patterns of a dream 'and need equipment for this earth's long night. Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from The Crown of Success But a time came at last when these careless days must end. Dame Deeley had to take a long journey - she would be absent for many a month and on the evening before her departure she called her four children around her. My dear children, she said, I must leave you; I must give you up for a while to the care of another. But I have chosen a guardian for you who is worthy of all your respect. Mr. Learn ing is coming to see you to-morrow, just an hour before I start; and I hope that he will find you all good and obedient children during my absence. Whatever he may bid you do, do for the love of me, and when you attend to Mr Learning, think that you are pleasing your mother.
