This volume contains population projections for the world and its subdivisions - countries, regions, and income groups. The projection results, which are presented in the detailed tables that comprise the main section of the book, are explained, summarized, and interpreted in the introductory section. Also described in the introduction are the base data and the project methodology, which has been revised since the last edition. Summary tables on population size and growth, age structure, fertility and mortality rates, the world and the continents, geographic regions and income groups, World Bank regions, and individual countries are included. The tables on age structure cover broad age groups (0-14, 15-64, and 65 and over) and provide a more convenient summary than did previous editions. The projections cover the entire world for almost two centuries, from 1985 to 2150. With data available as of mid-1989, separate projects were prepared for 187 countries, economies, territories, and small-country groupings. The length of the projection period was chosen to allow populations to approach stability, which in some cases takes essentially the entire period.

Concern about the size of the world’s population did not begin with the Baby Boomers. Overpopulation as a conceptual problem originated after World War I and was understood as an issue with far-reaching ecological, agricultural, economic, and geopolitical consequences. This study traces the idea of a world population problem as it developed from the 1920s through the 1950s, long before the late-1960s notion of a postwar “population bomb.” Drawing on international conference transcripts, the volume reconstructs the twentieth-century discourse on population as an international issue concerned with migration, colonial expansion, sovereignty, and globalization. It connects the genealogy of population discourse to the rise of economically and demographically defined global regions, the characterization of “civilizations” with different standards of living, global attitudes toward “development,” and first- and third-world designations.

This report provides a comprehensive overview of key aspects of population policies and dynamics for 197 countries since the mid-1970s. Updated biennially, it documents changes in key aspects of Government views and policies related to population size and growth, population age structure, fertility, reproductive health and family planning, health and mortality, spatial distribution and internal migration, and international migration. The report also includes two-page country profiles, with the first page containing information on changes in the Government views and policies and the second page containing data on selected population indicators corresponding to 1985, 1995, 2005 and 2013, the most recent revision year.
