Excerpt from Women's Work The writers of the present volume have a purely practical object in view. They have no desire to discuss, theoretically, the duties, rights, and responsibilities of women. They consider that it would be unwise to give prominence to considerations affecting the political or social position of women, in a work dealing specially with their industrial situation. On the other hand, they are fully aware that there is a necessary connection between the views which appear to be in course of formation as to the proper position of women in the labour market, and the change which has taken place in the standpoint from which all questions - even the most abstract - regarding the condition of women are now discussed. Various reforms have been forced on us within the last thirty years through the necessity of recognising, legally and socially, that development in the relations of women to the state and to society which has been brought about by the pressure of the altered circumstances of modern life. Excerpt from Women and Their Work Therefore, if the change in the position of women is really one of the great developments of the world, we should actually expect to find these errors, and also we should in this case expect to find that they are of the peculiarly irritating nature which accompany the transi tion period between youth and maturity, because the condition of equality between men and women means the growing up of women from a state of tutelage and protection to one of freedom and responsibility. Excerpt from The Employments of Women: A Cyclopaedia of Woman's Work Much of the verbal information I give is impartial, as it has been given by those with whom I talked in a casual way, they not know ing I had any object in view; and frequently it was done in a respect ful, yet ofi'-hand way, when making purchases. I have often bought articles merely for an excuse to talk with people, and gain informa tion on their occupations. I desire to present to those interested a clear and succinct view of the condition of business in the United States, the openings for entering into business, the vacancies women may fill and the crowded marts they may avoid, the qualifications needed for a selected pursuit, and the pursuits to which they are best adapted; also the probable result pecuniarily of each calling honorably pursued: in short, it is intended as a business manual for women. I wish to make it a practical work - useful, not ornamental. It is more a bringing together of facts, than a presentation of ideas - more a book of research than re ection. Yet the statements given are important, not merely as facts, but as being suggestive of things essential to or connected with occupations. The limits of each subject must necos sarily be short, as I wish to form a volume to come within the reach of every one that would desire a copy. Excerpt from Women's Work for Jesus, Vol. 2 Much has been said and written, of late, on the home duties of women, their social dis abilities, and their claims to political preferment, but very little in regard to Women's Work in the Church. The writer of these simple pages has left the home duties of women, so long and ably dis cussed, on the one hand, and the question of their social and political privileges on the other. Excerpt from The Church and Working Women Again the Creator indicates the natural and normal spheres of man's work and of woman's work when He said to the man, Cursed is the earth in thy work. With labour and toil shall it bring forth bread for thee, and to the woman in sorrow and pain shalt thou bring forth thy children. To the man he assigns external work, the production of wealth to the woman, motherhood and its consequences, home work and the training of her children. But, on the contrary, see her broken in upon by, Emma is not so well to-day; the work in the laundry is not being done as it should be; what shall we have for dinner? Excerpt from The Employments of Women: A Cyclopaedia of Woman's Work At no time in our country's history have so many women been thrown upon their own exertions. A million of men are on the battle field, and thousands of women, formerly dependent on them, have lost or may lose their only support. Some of the mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters of soldiers, may take the vacancies created in business by their absence - others must seek new channels of labor. May I ask it as a favor from readers that they will be so kind as to let me know when they come across any such evidence of familiar human fallibility?
