On February 20, 1978, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti married twenty-seven dancers and singers in his Africa 70 Organization, in what would become one of Nigeria’s most dramatic events of the decade. The Afrobeat Queens, as the young women were famously known, grew into indispensable actors in the making of Afrobeat music and subculture in the 1970s, as well as in Fela’s rise to prominence as a musician and activist. As dancers, singers and makeup artists, the young women elevated Afrobeat music to the level of a global phenomenon. However, their collaboration with Fela’s anti-government, anti-colonial ideologies made them special targets of State-organized violence. Their often-eroticized stage performances equally earned them the contempt of the larger Nigerian public. Despite the Queens’ critical roles in shaping Afrobeat’s character and ideology, they have failed to materialize as fully formed subjects of Afrobeat history. This is due in part because they have been imagined as indecent, underclass women undeserving of Afrobeat’s collective memorializing; or as collateral damage of Fela’s personal and political excesses. This research offers a framework for understanding the complexities of the Queens’ onstage and everyday life performances in Afrobeat, in relation to the postcolonial context that inspired those performances. I employ the concept of dialectics to explore the complexities and contradictions inhered in the Queens’ performances, as well as the shifting, sometimes contradictory, subject positions that their performances sanctioned. I also engage dialectics to highlight the implications of their performances for notions of individual and collective selfhood. Finally, I situate the women’s performances within a postcolonial framework to highlight the sociocultural, political and material conditions within and around which they collaborated with Fela Kuti. This research employs a combination of interviews of some of these women performers and Fela’s male collaborators, with archival research and a close reading existing and emergent cultural texts circulating within the Afrobeat subculture. This dissertation furthers the dialogue around gender in Afrobeat history, performance as embodied strategy by postcolonial, underclass Nigerian women, and the complexities of African feminist discourses vis-à-vis African patriarchies.

An often overlooked segment of Maine (and American) history is the story of women in the working class dance industries. Generally looked upon with a gasp of shock, burlesque and vaudeville dancing, and later taxi dancing and marathon dancing, were often the only way for women to survive (In taxi dancing, men paid women by the dance; while marathon dancing was a contest and women tried to outlast each other on the dance floor.) In turn-of-the-20th-century Maine, this new form of dancing was taking off, as it was elsewhere in the country. Historian Trudy Irene Scee explores the dance industries of Maine, how they were effected by national events, and how events in Maine effected national trends. She explores the difficulties women faced at that time and how they turned to new forms of entertainment to make money and pay for food and shelter. The focus of the book centers on the 1910s through the 1970s, but extends back into the 1800s, largely exploring the dance halls of the nineteenth century (be they saloons with hurdy-gurdy girls and the like, or dance halls with women performing the early forms of taxi- and belly dancing), and includes a chapter on belly dancing and other forms of dance entertainment in Maine in the 1980s to early 2000s. The newest form of dance—striptease dancing—is not be examined specifically, but is discussed as it pertains to the other dance forms. The book forms a unique look at one segment of Maine history and is a terrific addition to the literature on women’s issues.

It has been at least twenty years since the last of the Pomo ceremonies was held in a truly aboriginal fashion. Elaborate ceremonies of a more recently introduced "Messiah" cult were held as late as perhaps fifteen years ago, but these "Messiah" ceremonies contain only a few features common to the indigenous tribal observances. Dances are even yet to be seen in connection with some celebrations, principally on the Fourth of July, but there now remains so little that is really primitive about these that they are virtually worthless to the student. Information obtained through direct observation is at present, therefore, impossible, and we must depend for our knowledge of Pomo ceremonies and ceremonial organization upon the statements of the older men, and particularly those concerned with such matters in former days. From such sources rather full information concerning some of the ceremonies and dances is obtainable, but, under the circumstances, it is impossible to secure exhaustive data concerning all of them. In many instances informants recall only a few of the details of a given ceremony or dance. Sometimes only its name is remembered. Doubtless even the recollection of some ceremonies and dances has been lost. During a residence in the Pomo region from 1892 to 1904 the existing vestiges of some of these Pomo ceremonies were observed whenever possible, but no attempt at a systematic collection of data on the subject was made until 1903 and 1904, when this work was undertaken in conjunction with the collection of Pomo myths, as part of the investigations of the Ethnological and Archaeological Survey of California, maintained by the Department of Anthropology of the University of California through the generosity of Mrs. Phoebe A. Hearst. This information was obtained from informants of three Pomo dialects—Northern, Central, and Eastern. Where a native term is used in the following pages, therefore, the dialect is indicated by N, C, or E, in parentheses directly after it. The phonetic system employed is fully explained in "The Ethno-Geography of the Pomo Indians."
