Women have reached the highest levels of political office in Canada’s provinces and territories, but what difference has their rise to the top made? In Doing Politics Differently? leading researchers from across the country assess the track records of eleven premiers, including their impact on policies of particular interest to women and their influence on the tenor of legislative debate and the recruitment of other women as party candidates, cabinet ministers, and senior bureaucrats. By comparing the performance of women leaders and then contrasting it with the men who preceded and succeeded them, this innovative volume probes the importance of demographic diversity in top public office using a variety of powerful analytic lenses.

Women's participation in politics matters very much. Yet in Canada, women MPs have been stuck at a level of roughly one-fifth since 1993, and Stephen Harper has fewer women in his government than did Brian Mulroney. Although we may believe women are making progress, their representation in politics seems decidedly stalled. So it comes as no surprise that we hear little about issues of particular interest to women--breast cancer, violence against women, or the poverty of single mothers. In this engaging, no-nonsense, and witty book, Sylvia Bashevkin argues that Canadians have a profound unease with women in positions of political authority--what she calls the "women plus power equals discomfort" equation. She explores the specific reasons why this discomfort is particularly severe in Canada. Bashevkin also evaluates a range of barriers faced by women who enter politics, including the media's role in assessing the leadership styles, personal appearances, and private lives of female politicians. In clear, accessible terms, Bashevkin explains concepts such as "gender schemas" and "media framing" in terms of key examples, such as Belinda Stronach and Hillary Clinton. Finally, Bashevkin outlines some compelling solutions to address the stalemate facing women in Canadian politics.

For many years the severe under-representation of women in the institutions that forge Canadian public policy has been the subject of widespread discussion and debate, as have the various manifestations of inequality on the laws and policies themselves. MacIvor surveys this situation and the extent to which it is changing but offers as well a much broader approach to the subject, recognizing the impossibility of separating the roles played by women in politics from their part in Canadian society generally, MacIvor looks also at such topics as the structure of the economy, of the family and of popular culture. Women and Politics in Canada sets the stage for a discussion of the Canadian situation by exploring ideas about women in Western thought and the various feminist approaches that have arisen in response.

This is the only book to examine the political history, attitudes, and participation of women in English Canadian political parties. It reviews the background to female enfranchisement and right to hold public office, sit in the Senate, and entrench equal rights in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Bashevkin argues that relatively few women are active at elite levels in political parties, particularly in those that hold power or are in a competitive position in the opposition.

In the last fifty years, many of the institutional and societal barriers keeping Canadian women from public office have disappeared. Yet today, women hold only a quarter of the seats in the House of Commons a proportion that rose by just seven percentage points between 1993 and 2011. In this illuminating study, Elizabeth Goodyear-Grant examines a significant obstacle still facing women in political life: gendered media coverage. Based on interviews with MPs and party leaders, and on an analysis of print and television media in the 2000 and 2006 federal elections, Gendered News reveals an unsettling climate that affects the success of women in office, and that could deter them from running at all.

"Discussions of women's politics often treat feminist theory, the women's movement, and public policy-making as separate entities. In this text, Jacquetta Newman and Linda White argue that the three are closely entwined, and that understanding the intersections between them is essential to understanding women and politics in Canada. Women, Politics, and Public Policy explores how Canadian women's struggles against gender bias and oppression relate to political action, public policy change, and the women's movement as a whole. Designed as a core text for first-and second-year students of political science and women's studies, it is equally relevant to disciplines such as sociology, history, law, and social work, and will also be an invaluable reference source for more advanced studies."--BOOK JACKET.
