Sooner or later, we all face the questions explored in With or Without God, Life's Mysteries Continue, questions about the purpose of life, human mortality, spirituality, God, and life beyond the grave. The title conveys the author's tentativeness, perhaps humility. There are no postulates here, no truths to be revealed. These are ruminations. What makes these ruminations notable is that they are those of a man who, in his own words, has traversed centuries of human experience in 66 years and, in the process, acquired a unique perspective on life and nature. Mhlaba grew up in Zimbabwe, in what he calls a pre-modern age. He has lived in fear of spooks and ghosts, worshipping ancestral spirits, and was subject to the tyranny of witches and the machinations of unseen forces. He could have easily remained in that life as his forebears had done before him. Fortunately, his parents understood that he and his siblings would live much of their lives in a changed world, and prepared them through education. The book ends with a fascinating look into the future of humankind, taking the reader through uncharted territory and a new sense of awe about the meaning of life and what may lie beyond. Mhlaba went on to earn a Ph.D. and taught physics and mathematics at university level. He now lives in Newton, Massachusetts, with his wife, Nancy. They have four grown children. Mhlaba is currently writing a book on global governance.

What is death? Why do we die? and what happens after we die? Over the centuries, philosophers and theologians of the world’s religions have offered answers to the dilemma of death, yet this subject is rarely given the detailed attention it deserves in the contemporary Christian church. As Christians, how does our view of death impact the communication of the gospel in today’s pluralistic societies? In this study, Dr Bobby Bose not only develops a solid biblical theology of death, he also reviews the teachings of contemporary and historical Christian theologians around the world, and examines the “state-after-death” beliefs of Hindus, Muslims and Secular Humanists. The author shows that “state-after- death” was a central component of conversation in the early church, and is also a major component of God’s mission to rescue humanity. As the East converges with the West, it is vital that Christians develop a missiological approach to “state-after-death” that will encourage positive engagement with people of other faiths and beliefs.

"McGill has the power to make ideas, concepts, differing perspectives vivid--to 'in-flesh' them. . . .Then comes the "switch" or reversal or inversion empowered by the very confrontation McGill has arranged. . . . McGill leaves only the demonic as the object of our worship. Just when we supposed that he was about to come to the defense of this "world-governing, background God," he dismisses such a God, leaving us with the demonic, leaving us room to affirm our own doubts and perplexities, leaving us with a harsher formulation than we might have ventured, leaving us attentive to what he is going to do next and to where he is going to lead us. Because by now we are following him." --From the "Introduction."

In cultures throughout human history people have believed that some part of themselves continued to exist after they died. Part of that belief is that living can influence what happens to the dead in the afterlife, and the dead can return from the afterlife to affect the living. Death Gods: An Encyclopedia of the Rulers, Evil Spirits, and Geographies of the Dead describes the many ways the afterlife—especially that part of the afterlife commonly known as Hell—has been characterized in myths from around the world. The hundreds of entries provide readers with a guide to the afterlife as portrayed in these myths - its geography, its rulers, its inhabitants, how they got there, and what happens after their arrival. While the Devil is a prominent resident and ruler of the afterworld in many religions, especially Christianity, this book examines many other versions of Hell whether presided over by the Devil, Hades, or one of the many other rulers of the dead. Death Gods provides concise encyclopedic entries on all aspects of the mythology of the afterlife: The underworlds form the myths of cultures from across the globe—for example, Xibalba, the underworld of the Quiche Maya; Di Yu, the underground realm of the dead in Chinese mythology; the gods and demons of the afterlife—the Hindu god of death and justice Yama; Ahriman, the evil twin of the benevolent god Ahura Mazda in Zoroastrian mythology; Buso, the invisible ghouls who haunt graveyards and feed on human corpses in Philippine mythology. The volume includes an extensive bibliography of the most useful resources for understanding the mythology of death and the afterlife.

The idea of the resurrection of the physical body and the eternal continuation of life with this body in a future paradisiacal kingdom of God on earth is one of the most enigmatic of religious ideas. It fully contradicts our knowledge of the transitoriness of all things in this universe. According to the author, the origin for this idea lies in certain forms of otherworld experiences, as, for example, reported by people who had near-death experiences: encounters with the dead in brilliantly beautiful bodies and the experience of paradisiacal, seemingly earthly landscapes. He observes that cultures with a pre-modern cosmology sometimes projected such otherworld experiences onto this world, to distant and unknown locations on earth. These experiences were the blueprint for an expectation of paradisiacal conditions on earth. The author establishes parallels between the reports of otherworld experiences and the eschatological ideas of Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and Christianity. He shows that otherworld experiences can indeed foster the expectation of paradisiacal conditions on earth by referring to the Ghost Dance movement of the Lakota people in 1890. He presumes that the confusion of worlds proved fatal not only for the Lakota people but also for Jesus of Nazareth. ""A welcome addition to the literature exploring the relationships between religious beliefs and extraordinary experiences. In a bold and original thesis, Schwenke argues compellingly that beliefs in postmortem physical resurrection and existence in an earthly paradise originated in cultural misinterpretations of near-death, otherworld, and spirit-encounter phenomena. The interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approach--spanning Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, and the Lakota Sioux Ghost Dance religion--will appeal to theologians, anthropologists, psychologists, and readers generally interested in the historical and comparative study of religions, the afterlife, and related experiences."" --Gregory Shushan, author, Near-Death Experience in Indigenous Religions, and Conceptions of the Afterlife in Early Civilizations ""If your penchant is for the same old same old, this is not your book. If, however, you are up for a true theological adventure featuring genuinely creative, provocative, and original ideas at every turn, then read Schwenke. The Confusion of Worlds is one of those rare books that successfully reconceptualizes old issues in new ways, so that readers will have thoughts they never had before."" --Dale C. Allison Jr., Princeton Theological Seminary Heiner Schwenke holds a Doctorate in Natural Sciences and a Doctorate in Philosophy. He is Research Fellow at the Faculty of Theology, Basel, and conducts the research project Transcendent Experiences: Phenomena, Ideas, and Judgments at the Max-Planck-Institute for the History of Science in Berlin.

We have an eternal soul—God has given us convincing evidence! The purpose of this book is to show skeptics and seasoned Christians alike that there is abundant additional evidence quite apart from the Bible. This is an ongoing thing with God. The fate of Christianity was not sealed with events that happened 2000 years ago. He is furthering his work in this world by continuing to give us this evidence, whether in the form of paranormal phenomena, knowledge conveyed directly into the minds of selected people, or messages from loved ones in heaven. Many examples of these types are given in this book. Some include quite convincing substantiation. It is hard to see how any but the most hardened skeptic would not be moved by some of these happenings. But then, a hardened skeptic would most likely not be reading this book. This book is definitely not a “preaching to the choir” type of book. The “choir”, whether one or more Christians, a whole congregation, or even the entire Christian Church, never hears this type of preaching. None of these matters are ever brought up, from the pulpit, the lectern, or the thousands of pamphlets, leaflets and complete books to which we are exposed. The fact is that the Christian Church has been slow to recognize God's ongoing work in our world through these means. It is my hope that my work, and that of others possibly in a more accredited position than myself, will serve to wake up the Church to this exciting aspect of God's continuing conveyance of the truth. I am not sure just when I made the decision to write books which basically called organized religion to task in failing to recognize the importance of the unexplainable happenings in world literature. I had read Raymond Moody's bestseller Life After Life many years before, and had been captivated by the revelation of near-death excursions. Eventually, the notion took hold that God is giving us these experiences to strengthen our religious commitment, and with this realization came the decision to write about it. Your Soul Is Eternal was purposely written to be independent of the Bible, so that it would be clear that God intended this information as an autonomous source.
