This book covers several essential aspects of pervasive ambient backscatter communication, one of the most cutting-edge technologies for Internet-of-Things. It begins with introductory Part I, which presents visions, basic concepts, principles, and paradigms of ambient backscatter. Also, a taxonomy of state-of-the-art ambient backscatter systems is provided from the perspective of the OSI model. Part II and III study how ambient backscatter systems work on the communication and networking levels. Specifically, Part II discusses in detail how to make use of ambient WiFi signals to provide high-throughput backscatter communications with WiFi 1 (chapter 5), WiFi 2-3 (chapter 4), WiFi 4 (chapter 3), WiFi 5-6 (chapter 6) standards. Further, Part III includes several of the most advanced ambient backscatter network solutions, which are made possible by the first multi-hop backscatter (chapter 7), first backscatter mesh (chapter 8), and multiprotocol backscatter (chapter 9). On top of reliable communication and networks, we propose two novel applications that are thought impossible before, lightweight spatial sound recording over the air (chapter 10) and self-powered wireless wearables for healthcare (chapter 11). To conclude the monograph, we point out critical challenges for realizing the vision of pervasive backscatter IoTs and potential directions of ambient backscatter applications. The book provides an in-depth understanding of ambient backscatter technologies. In particular, we mainly take ubiquitous WiF signals as the communication sources and adopt a top-down approach to introduce three crucial subjects: WiFi backscatter communication, ambient backscatter network, and self-powered application systems. For each subject, we carefully divide it into several relatively independent topics, which come with the latest advances in pervasive backscatter and include extensive discussions of closely related state-of-the-art methodologies.

This SpringerBrief introduces the basics of wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs). In particular, the background and concept of WPCNs are briefly discussed. Moreover, this brief provides an extensive study of the recent developments in this area from an optimization perspective. Wireless powered communication network (WPCN) is a new network paradigm for IoT, where wireless devices (WDs) are powered by radio frequency (RF) based wireless power transfer (WPT) to eliminate the need for recharging or replacing the batteries manually and to prolong their lifetime. In this context, the brief also discusses some optimization problems for state-of-the-art scenarios of wireless powered communication networks. The target audiences for this SpringerBrief are researchers, engineers, and undergraduate and graduate-level students, who are studying or working in wireless powered communication networks and its performance optimization.

This book investigates the resource allocation in backscatter-assisted communication networks. With the development of backscatter communications, integrating backscatter communication technology into traditional communication networks can improve the network performance significantly. To fully improve the performance of backscatter-assisted communication networks, resource allocation is of special importance. It is worth to mention that the resource allocation in backscatter-assisted communication networks is more challenging than that in traditional communication networks, and the tradeoff of the performance between backscatter communications and traditional communications needs to be carefully considered. In this book, considering that game theory is an attractive tool for developing and analyzing distributed, flexible, and autonomous networks, we develop the auction-based time scheduling schemes, contract-based time assignment scheme, and evolutionary game-based access point and service selection scheme for the backscatter-assisted radio-frequency-powered cognitive networks, where some important properties such as individual rationality are considered. We also employ the optimization approach and develop a relay mode selection and resource sharing scheme for backscatter-assisted hybrid relay networks to improve the throughput. We believe that the developed resource allocation schemes in this book can provide useful guidance for the design of backscatter-assisted communication networks and future Internet of Things. Graduate students, researchers, and engineers in the field of communication networks can benefit from the book.

This exciting resource covers the fundamentals of wireless and PLC technologies. Different types of wireless and PLC technologies used for indoor IoT applications are described. The channel models for both wireless and power line communications are introduced, highlighting the main challenges for these types of communications inside the indoor environment. The book explores the hybrid technologies with television white space (TVWS), very high frequency (VHF) wireless technology, and broadband PLC (BPLC) for indoor high speed IoT networks. A TVWS standardized BPLC system is proposed, which integrates the requirement of primary user sensing and the permissible transmission power spectral density (PSD) for TVWS users into BPLC standard, regarding VHF band access. The hybrid ultra-high frequency (UHF) wireless-powerline sensor networks with a focus on enlarging the network lifetime via cross-layer optimization is presented. Hybrid video sensor networks (HVSNs) with high data rate requirement are explored. Through the joint design of video encoding rate, aggregate power consumption, channel access control, along with link rate allocation, a distributed algorithm is developed, which divides the computational burden among all nodes with much lower communication overhead. The effectiveness of the cross-layer designs are evaluated through extensive simulation results.
