After buying a struggling veterinary practice in Winter Beach, Florida, Spencer Hawley and his Boston terrier, Gidget, are reduced to seducing and abducting neighborhood dogs by night to rustle up clients. They then return them safely to their frantic owners in the morning in exchange for their gratitude and patronage. It's not exactly the best way to do business, but Spencer is desperate. In the course of his breach of ethics, Spencer encounters Walker Braddock III, an unscrupulous mortician, and the sexually-conflicted Lucinda Vickers, Walker's former high school partner in crime. While finding herself attracted to both Spencer and his assistant Missy, Lucinda is even more enticed by the fortune she and Walker can realize if they are able to wrest the orange groves of citrus grower Eldridge Stoval out from under the Miami developers. To Spencer's surprise, he and Eldridge are linked by more than their interest in Boston terriers, but their bond is severed during Hurricane Buzz, when Eldridge is murdered-and Spencer is the number one suspect. With the investigation closing in, Spencer and Missy must find Eldridge's slayer to clear his name.

Ambitious and cocky, a young neurosurgery resident left his hometown of Chicago for what became an unforgettable adventure in San Francisco, both exhilarating and disheartening, destined to irrevocably change his future. "Dogmeat" was the moniker he was given as apprentice to a famous--and famously intimidating--neurosurgeon. Moris Senegor gives a disarmingly honest account of his "Dogmeat" days in the wards and operating rooms of UCSF. He also vividly recounts how he fell in love with San Francisco and a woman he found there. His story is for both surgeons and anyone ever beguiled by San Francisco.

The fourth volume in the Secret Beaches series, one of two on the Salish Sea, covers 93 beaches in the southern Gulf Islands, including Salt Spring, Galiano, Saturna, Mayne, Thetis and Pender. At some locations, the selling point is a view of sandstone eroded into astounding curves and honeycombed lattices. At others, it's the chance of seeing the resident orcas of J1, K1 and L1 pods, whose summer home is the Gulf Islands. Theo's hand-drawn maps are indispensable, as each island marks its public beach access points differently, if they mark them at all. His detailed entries give comprehensive descriptions and an illustrative photo or painting for each beach. As usual, the charming paintings and photos are done by Theo himself. Whether seconds from the ferry or farther along a twisting, unsigned back road, the beach best suited to your adventure waits to be found in Secret Beaches of the Salish Sea.

A staggering one third of British households now own a dog as a pet, meaning dog-friendly days out and weekend trips are becoming ever more popular.
