Correspondence from William Christy, Jr. to John Torrey, dated 1833-1837. The first is a note written while Torrey was in London, asking him to dinner the following Wednesday. In two of the letters Christy introduces entomological colleagues who are travelling to New York (R.H. Lewis, Edward Doubleday, and Robert Foster). The bulk of Christy's communication concerns the shipment and receipt of specimens, and requests and offers of more: for his part, Christy requests plants from Georgia and from those collected by Schweinitz, as well as an American bullfrog. He enthusiastically tells Torrey of plants he has received from Chile and Australia. After news of New York's great fire of 1836 Christy expresses the hope that Torrey was unaffected.

Correspondence from William L. Marcy to John Torrey, dated 1836. In the first letter, dated April 27, Marcy attempts to pursuade a skeptical Torrey that the terms being offered by the state of New York to scientists participating in its natural history survey are not as bad as he thinks: "... a more definite explanation of [the terms] may induce you to view them in a more favorable light..." This letter appears to be missing a page. In the second letter, dated July 16, it appears Torrey has accepted the commission; Marcy discusses further arrangements for perfoming the survey and some of the other naturalists he is attempting to recruit.

Correspondence from Charles Daubeny to John Torrey, dated October 31, 1837 and March 16, 1858. In the first letter, written from Albany, New York during his tour of North America, Daubeny outlines his travel plans for the next few weeks and asks for Torrey's help in facilitating some meetings with prominent scientists during a projected short stay in New York City. The second letter is written in reply to an inquiry from Torry about "superphosphate of alumina." After discussing the issue, Daubeny goes on to catch Torrey up on more personal matters.
