William Murfree Tax Receipt Book PDF Download

This volume appears to be a private record kept by Murfree as sheriff of Hertford County, N.C., as a result of an investigation into the public accounts by the North Carolina General Assembly of 1768 which reported that many of the county sheriffs were in arrears in their settlements with the colonial treasury. Murfree seems to have kept this record to show precisely what had been collected in his name and from whom, not only naming the taxpayers of the county, but indicating which of the three years they were subject to pay tax in the county, the sum collected, and frequently to whom they had paid the tax and the medium of exchange.
