"Repressed scholar Percival Endicott Whyborne has two skills: reading dead languages and hiding in his office at the Ladysmith Museum. After the tragic death of the friend he secretly loved, he's ruthlessly suppressed any desire for another man. So when handsome ex-Pinkerton Griffin Flaherty approaches him to translate a mysterious book, Whyborne wants to finish the job and get rid of the detective as quickly as possible. Griffin left the Pinkertons following the death of his partner, hoping to start a new life. But the powerful cult which murdered Glenn has taken root in Widdershins, and only the spells in the book can stop them. Spells the intellectual Whyborne doesn't believe are real. As the investigation draws the two men closer, Griffin's rakish charm threatens to shatter Whyborne's iron control. When the cult resurrects an evil sorcerer who commands terrifying monsters, can Whyborne overcome his fear and learn to trust? Will Griffin let go of his past and risk falling in love? Or will Griffin's secrets cost Whyborne both his heart and his life?"--Page 4 of cover.

Inspector Ruffing, the troubled hero of several other Nigro plays, returns in this baffling mystery that was an audience favorite at the First International Mystery Festival in 2007. In a peaceful house near the Welsh border, an entire family has vanished suddenly without a trace one evening, with supper on the table and no apparent violence. Ruffing's attempt to understand what's happened to a couple and their two daughters leads him deep into his own dark soul. The only clue is a piece of paper left on a desk with the word "widdershins" written on it. Beautiful women, dark secrets, the Impressionists and the Druids all figure in this unusual and thought-provoking play.--From publisher description.

The Widdershins Adventures come to a thrilling conclusion in an action-packed fantasy in which the young outlaw with a heart of gold (and the pesky voice of a god in her ear) returns home to face her destiny... After almost a year away from the grand city of Davillon, wandering thief Widdershins has finally come to terms with the pain and grief that drove her to leave. When she returns, all she can hope is that her old friends can forgive her hasty actions. But even that may be too much to ask...because home is not what it used to be. The entire city is on edge, with unrest and rumors of upheaval spreading through the darkened streets, and Shins is shocked to discover that she already knows the person behind the strife all too well—her dreaded nemesis, Lisette Suvagne. Thanks to an unholy bargain with otherworldly powers, the vindictive Lisette is far more dangerous than before—and far too formidable even for Shins and her personal god, Olgun, to confront alone. Now, for the sake of her friends, her city, and her own soul, Shins must gather allies from every corner of Davillon—lawful, unlawful, and seriously unlawful—if she hopes to face the greatest challenge of her life. Because the greatest challenge of Widdershins’ life might also be the end of it...

Widdershins is inspired by the Newcastle witch trials, where 16 people were hanged. Despite being the largest mass execution of witches on a single day in England, these trials are not widely known about. In August 1650, 15 women and one man were hanged as witches after a Scottish witchfinder found them guilty of consorting with the devil. This notorious man was hired by the Puritan authorities in response to a petition from the Newcastle townsfolk who wanted to be rid of their witches. Widdershins is told through the eyes of Jane Chandler, a young woman accused of witchcraft, and John Sharpe, the witchfinder who condemns her to death. Jane Chandler is an apprentice healer. From childhood, she and her mother have used herbs to cure the sick. But Jane soon learns that her sheltered life in a small village is not safe from the troubles of the wider world. From his father's beatings to his uncle's raging sermons, John Sharpe is beset by bad fortune. Fighting through personal tragedy, he finds his purpose: to become a witchfinder and save innocents from the scourge of witchcraft. The Historical Novel Society said of Widdershins: "Impeccably written, full of herbal lore and the clash of ignorance and prejudice against common sense, as well as the abounding beauty of nature, it made for a great read. There are plenty of books, both fact and fiction, available about the witch-trial era, but not only did I not know about such trials in Newcastle, I have not read a novel that so painstakingly and vividly evokes both the fear and joy of living at that time." The duo hopes to find a wizard in the City of Seven who will be able to help with both problems. Follow along as our demon, Lord Malgon and our hero, Sir Reginald, make themselves unwelcome with fairies, humans, dwarves and giants—all while racing to get to the City of Seven before Mal’s supremely evil brother.
