Excerpt from Why Italy Is With the Allies The power of this great national movement has fortunately been directed only to the securing of Italian liberty and not to the oppression of others. No doubt the reason of this is the fortunate fact that no alien race dwells beside the Italian within the boundaries of the Peninsula. There is no one for the Italian to. Oppress. But the result has been the sustained purity and idealism of patriotic emotion there, from the time of Mazzini's Young Italy to our own. Excerpt from Why Italy Is at War In England, at this moment, the question of Home Rule for Ireland was threatening to reach _a violent crisis. In Russia the government was fully occupied in dealing with internal unrest and strikes of obscure origin. In Italy the recent labour troubles were still giving cause for anxiety; moreover, on account of the long and exhausting campaign in Libya and the negli gence of the Italian government, the country was quite unprepared for another war. The moment therefore had clearly arrived for Germany to realize her cherish ed dream of hegemony in Northern Europe, and for Austria to gain that Balkan supremacy which had been snatched from 'her hands by the two Balkan wars. Excerpt from The Moral Basis of Italy's War That the path of our future lay honestly open to us! Was it not evident that the compact to which We had remained and should have remained faithful had been broken by the other party to it and thus rendered null and void 2 We were in this way saved from a fearful dilemma. We were saved because our diplomacy, in spite of its past mistakes, had not, during the settlement of the clauses of the Treaty, been so short-sighted as to forget to provide for our equality as Allies, and for the essential reservations which proceeded logically therefrom. If our former allies, acting at their own discretion, came to regard us as their vassals, they have only themselves to blame for such blindness, and they alone must bear the consequences. As for us, we are innocent of this error, to which indeed we came near to falling the victims. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Italy's Contribution to the Great Victory The writer of the following pages was an official in the American Service, who was stationed in Italy for a year and a half during 1917 and 1918. His duties took him to all parts of Italy, and brought him in contact with all sorts and conditions of men and women of that country. His opportunities for observing and for gathering accurate information were unlimited. He went to Italy a skeptic as to Italy's efficient assistance to the Allied Cause. On his return to America he was shocked to discover the general ignorance of things Italian in his own country, but was gratified to find a strong desire to hear the truth about them. Whenever he talked of Italy, he found interested and sympathetic listeners, who were amazed to learn what he had to disclose. As a result, he was asked to jot down the gist of these conversations, which he has been most willing to do in the hope that thereby he will reach a larger audience. As will be evident, no attempt at literary composition, or an historic essay on Italy's contribution to the war, has been attempted. It is more a connected recital of random conversations, relying upon the vivid impressions burned into his memory by the events narrated, and supplemented by reference to personal letters written at the time to his friends. While frankly and purposely pro-Italian, the writer has sternly resisted any temptation to exaggerate the truth as to facts and conditions, and hopes and believes that he has recorded a just and moderate estimate of Italy's attitude and accomplishments during the Great War. Excerpt from Italy's Problems and Achievements Italy's cooperation with the Allies kept a considerable portion of the Austrian army busy. It was also of great value to the French and English in the Mediterranean. Had Italy gone with the Teutons, her fleet might have menaced Marseilles and other French ports, and her sub marines would have done great damage to the English and French transports. Her Own southern harbors would have sheltered the Teutonic submarines and cruisers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Italy in the War It was an honourable privilege to be permitted to observe, at close range, the young army of an old and famous people, locked in its struggle with a formidable antagonist. Nor could the observer fail to be stirred by these grandiose warlike Operations amid scenes that make so moving an appeal to the historic and artistic imagination carried on as they were under conditions of exceptional and excessive difficulty. Italy has borne the strain with patriotic ardour and high courage, and she has done valuable service to her allies no less than to herself. She has earned the gratitude and respect of the great nations with which she is associated in the vindication of liberty and justice and her well-wishers have good ground to expect that she will emerge from the contest with her national and racial unity complete, and with her political and economic stability more securely established. Excerpt from The War Against Germany and Italy: Mediterranean and Adjacent Areas This collection of some five hundred pictures dramatically amplifies the written record of World War II in the Mediterranean Theater and the Middle East. The images freeze in place the soldiers, the weapons, the operations, the geography, and the tenor of the moment. Major General Orlando Ward's Foreword to the first edition (see next page) describes this visual dimension as essential to fully understanding military history. The War/1 gainst Germany and Italy: Mediterranean and Adjacent Areas was one of the first volumes in the United States Anny in World War 11 series, and it has stood the test of time. In its detailed coverage, the book has also served as a useful resource for anyone seeking to illustrate this stage of the war. Although this second edition keeps all the original photographs, captions, and short narrative historical introductions to each section, we have taken sev eral steps to improve the appearance, currency, and utility of the book. We obtained new prints of the photographs to ensure their clarity, replacing the old printing negatives. We also removed outdated references and developed an appendix that provides more detailed information on the sources and cataloging numbers of the photographs to assist those who want to get their own prints. In visually documenting the World War 11 experience, this is an invaluable col lection. In publishing this upgraded edition, we hope to revive and expand the book's effectiveness in promoting an awareness of the determination, courage, and sacrifices of the American soldier in World War 11. Similar second editions of the other two pictorial volumes in the World War series are in preparation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
