Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,3, University of Marburg, course: Concept of Love, language: English, abstract: Not only because of its provoking title, 'Tis Pity She's a Whore can be described as John Ford's most controversial play (Anderson 92). The play's main plot portrays the passionate but forbidden love between the siblings Giovanni and Annabella. Moreover, 'Tis Pity is an extraordinary violent play with "... several vivid action sequences" (Abate 94). All in all, there are five murder victims, Annabella's tutress Putana is blinded, and her father Florio drops dead. The play reaches its brutal climax when Giovanni enters the feast with Annabella's heart on his dagger. Nonetheless, the Cardinal does only blame one person for what has happened in the course of the play: "Of one so young, so rich in Nature's store, - Who could not say, 'Tis Pity she's a whore?" (V.vi.158-159). The Cardinal's final condemnation seems to be "... unnecessarily vindictive" (Hopkins ix) because Annabella has not only repented of her sins, but she was also killed by her brother and her heart was displayed on his dagger. Besides, Corinne S. Abate points out that there are several other characters "... who could claim this denunciation and our pity" (Abate 94).

John Ford's tragedy 'Tis Pity She's A Whore was first performed between 1629 and 1633 and since then its themes of incest, love versus duty and forbidden passion have made it a widely studied and performed, if controversial, play. This guide offers students an introduction to its critical and performance history, including TV and film adaptations. It includes a keynote chapter outlining major areas of current research on the play and four new critical essays. Finally, a guide to critical, web-based and production-related resources and an annotated bibliography provide a basis for further individual research.

The last decade has seen a revival of interest in John Ford and especially 'Tis Pity She's a Whore, his tragedy of religious scepticism, incestuous love, and revenge. This text in particular has provided a focus for scholarship as well as being the subject of a number of major theatrical productions. Simon Barker guides the reader through the full range of previous interpretations of the play; moving from an overview of traditional readings he goes on to enlarge upon new questions that have arisen as a consequence of critical and cultural theory.

Download John Ford: Critical Re-Visions Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Originally published in 1988, John Ford: Critical Re-Visions offers a wholesale reconsideration of the reputation of a major Caroline playwright. The volume takes an historical perspective and offers a better understanding of Ford's achievement in the light of the theatrical and social conditions of his own day. The collection of essays was assembled for the 400th anniversary of the playwright's birth. The contributors, well known scholars in the field, work from a variety of critical positions: insights associated with a new historicist, feminist, structuralist and post-structuralist theory are represented, together with more traditional approaches. The essays range from detailed readings of the individual plays, including 'Tis Pity She's a Whore, Perkin Warbeck, Love's Sacrifice and The Lady's Trial to more wide-ranging studies of imagery and theatrical convention; several help to illuminate our understanding of Ford's plays in the theatre of his own time, while another offers a detailed account of post-war stage, film and television productions.
