Excerpt from The Master Nor did he care how the people regarded him. He could sit, therefore, at the place of custom unmoved, inexorable, merciless. But on the morning of this day he was ex cited to a degree startling to those who saw him. And not without reason. Standing before him was a man, a raiser Of sheep, who held a scrap Of parchment in his hand on which some figures had been, written, these figures representing duties he was re quired to pay. He was taller than the average man, stockily built, robust, his appearance in every way suggesting vigorous, outdoor life. Excerpt from The Little Master John Wales was his brother-ih-law and very good friend; and he was right. It was, indeed, a sad pity to abuse the delicate organs of sight, in that way. Excerpt from Evenings With the Master In the Cool of the Evening In the cool of the evening, when the low sweet whispers waken, When the laborers turn them homeward, and the weary have their will, When the censers of the roses o'er the forest-aisles are shaken, Is it but the wind that cometh o'er the far green hill? For they say 'tis but the sunset winds that wander through the heather, Rustle all the meadow-grass and bend the dewy fern; They say 'tis but the winds that bow the reeds in prayer together, And fill the shaken pools with fire along the shadowy burn. In the beauty of the twilight, in the Garden that He loveth, They have veiled His lovely vesture with the darkness of a name! Thro' His Garden, thro' His Garden, it is but the wind that moveth, No more; but O, the miracle, the miracle is the same! In the cool of the evening, when the sky is an old story Slowly dying, but remembered, ay, and loved with passion still, Hush! *** the fringes of His garment, in the fading golden glory, Softly rustling as He cometh o'er the far green hill. - Alfred Noyes. Excerpt from The Grand Master's Treasure IN giving to the public this volume, which I am led to believe is the first work of fiction dealing with the principles and members of the Inde pendent Order Of Odd Fellows, I trust that it will be received in the same spirit in which it was written. The good of the Order has been the underlying thought, and my chief desire has been to so bring before the uninitiated something of the spirit of our beloved Order that the world at large may recognize its advantages and uplift ing influence, and seek admission. There cannot be too many Odd Fellows and Rebekahs. On April 30, 1894, I became a Rebekah, and on the same occasion was installed as the first Noble Grand of Riverview Rebekah Lodge, No. 49, I. O. O. F., of Bucksport, Maine; and in the year 1897 I was retired from the Office of President of the Rebekah State Assembly. Owing to change of residence, I have been unable to visit the home lodge for several years, but I have ever kept in close touch with it. During this period I have vis ited many lodges nearer my dwelling place and have been most cordially welcomed.
