As a 115 lb. teenager drafted into the United States Army during the Korean conflict, Donald Huard was laughed at, taunted and bullied by other recruits. He met his military responsibilities effectively, however, facing the potential for a military court martial during one tour of duty before his honorable discharge in 1954. His is an interesting soldier's story. Determined to get a college education, Don used his G I Bill to get his associate's and bachelor's degrees. Then, with the firm support of his wife and four children over a very long period of seventeen years he managed to meet the requirements for his master's and Ph.D. degrees in psychology with minors in criminology and business. His is a very successful story of constructive determination. How does one recover at the age of 50 as the loving father of four teenagers grieving the loss of their mother? How does he rebuild his own life following such sadness? Eventually, Don met and married Margie, the wonderful lady who enabled him to live again. Theirs is an interesting story of true love. In his early eighties now, Dr. Huard tells his story in this, his own personal autobiography, written slowly over the last 25 years.

What began with a basic curiosity of an adoptee about his biological origins, became a genetic exploration into history when he discovered two of his identifying y-chromosome markers created a rare, but traceable, combination which appeared in supporting data of multiple research papers. This book explores both his documented ancestry and that revealed by his y-DNA. Along the way, everything in his personal history seems to contribute in some way to the results of his research. The most significant element of that personal history is probably his learned inability to allow himself to be defeated by transient intellectual problems, or perceived handicap. In the process of joining him as he searches for his past, you will be exposed to techniques that can assist you in discovering aspect of your own genealogy which you may never have considered. You will also, as he states in the book, be introduced to secret knowledge contained in the Book of Genesis. As part of that knowledge, you will learn why the patriarchs were given lifespans ranging from several hundred to nearly a thousand years. You will learn of a connection between Stonehenge, Britains earthwork hedges, and the Great Pyramids one that does not involve, or invoke, alien astronauts. Many books have garnered the labeled Groundbreaking, but seldom has there been one that is so current as to render the use of any conventional bibliography superfluous. Almost weekly there are new findings in the fields of DNA ancestry, archaeology and the relatively new field of astro-archaeology. Amazingly, they all seem to reinforce the connections and associations revealed here. But you might also discover things about the factual underpinnings of religion which you might not wish to know, or think about. Not the least of which is why there was time when the wisest people believed their Grandpa was a Deity.

'Dear Grandpa, why?' is a question that has been asked many times over, by descendants of those who have died in war. John L. Read, however, has placed his energy into actually seeking an answer to his own question. - Hon. Sir Eric Neal, AC, CVO Edward Tompson Mobsby, father of twin baby girls, volunteered for war service and was shot down by the Japanese in New Guinea in 1942. John Read's quest for an apology for the death of his grandfather took him and his family from suburban Australia to a startling discovery in the mighty Owen Stanley Ranges, and on to Hiroshima. John learned about Miyuki, a Japanese woman who had also taken her mother to New Guinea to answer questions about her grandfather's death. When they eventually met in Osaka, their long conversations brought understanding, reconciliation and, almost, forgiveness. And, critically, revealed the value of cross-cultural dialogue in helping spare future generations from the despair and waste of international conflict. John L. Read's odyssey provides a historical insight into the cause of the war against Japan and a graphic portrayal of the cultural grief experienced by families who lost loved ones. - Charlie Lynn, Kokoda Treks

Grandpa’s Soup tells a story for the pleasure, information, and entertainment of the reader. It is a narrative of the author’s memories of growing up in a tiny island village in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria in Africa. It was inspired by memories of his grandpa, who passed away while he was still very much in the formative years of his life. They are memories that he considers worth sharing because of the lasting impact they have had on his adult life. The author hopes that the book affords the reader a peek into Kalabari-Ijaw ethnography and culture while not losing its very essence, which is motivational—a motivation engendered by the seemingly innocuous acts of a grandfather that roundly impacted the life of his grandson. Also, he attempted to present the book in a simple prose format for easy readability by a wide range of audiences across cultures and demographics.
