"Lizzie and Abraham sitting in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G. First comes love. Then comes marriage. Then comes Lizzie with a baby carriage." Lizzie Cray had thought of being married under the magnolia tree's full bloom ever since she was a little girl. The object of her affection was her neighbor Abraham Huff whom she'd loved even when she was too young to know love's meaning or all it might entail. Life in the 1800s was a struggle. Financial ruins and starvation were rampant in the late 1830s. Then the Civil War came in the 1860s. Could a young couple build a life together? Even if that was possible, would they survive the war and its aftermath?

Download Corn Flower In Blowing Snow on the Great Plains Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Corn Flower, an eleven-year-old Native American girl, is a member of the Kansa tribe living along the Cottonwood River in the 1820s. When winter arrives on the Great Plains, Corn Flower and her best friend Night Sparrow build a sled to challenge their brothers in a hillside race. Because of the icy temperatures, many activities such as bead making, storytelling, and completing the winter count for the yearly history of their tribe remain in their family lodge. As the ice pack hardens, the children participate in the snow snake as they throw a long rod or stick down a narrow channel in the snow. When a stray coyote attacks Corn Flower and her goat along the river, she is saved by her horse Brownie. Along with her father and brothers, Corn Flower travels to the trading post. On her return home, Corn Flower is startled to find that the tribal storyteller Walks at Night has fallen in the snow. Corn Flower nurses Walks at Night back to health by using her wild crafting skills with herbs and roots for healing. At the shell ceremony Corn Flower and Night Sparrow each receive a new shell on their necklace for surviving their twelfth winter season on the Great Plains. Includes Readers Guide.

A classic collection of stories showcasing some of India's best-known writers After a hesitant start towards the end of the ninetheenth century, short fiction in Malyalam came into its own in the 1930s. Since then, writer has experimented with content , style and language to give the genre a unique standing in contemporary Indian litereature as perhaps the most translated, not just into English and other Indian languages but also into other media such as flim and televison. From Vaikom Muhammed Basheer and O.. Vijayan to Kamamla Das and Sarah Joesph, this volume brings together an extraordinary range of writers and themes. There are among others, M.T. Vasudevan Mair's ' Oppol', a story about childhood innoccence and loss, which was made into award-winning flim, Paul Zacharia's 'Bhaskara Pattelar and my Life' a brilliant psychological examination of the master-slave dialectic; Lalithambika Antherjanam's path-breaking 'Goddess of Revenge' in which a young Namboodiri woman becomes a prostitute to expose the hypocrisy of her husband and their rigidly orthodox community; and N.S. Madhavan's classic story of an upper-caste widowwho finds redemption in the forbidden touch of a Pulaya. Translated with flair and integrity, these stories capture the vibrancy of a literary culture at its creative best.
