First published in 1920, this volume was written by the theologian, scholar, and canon of Canterbury Cathedral, Arthur James Mason. It was intended to bring together the known documentary evidence relating to the history of the relics of Thomas Becket. Divided into four sections, the book presents the narrative accounts of the death of Thomas Becket, the history of his tomb and the shrine dedicated to him, and the subsequent destruction of the shrine under the reign of Henry VIII. The last section, and the most significant for this study, is devoted to the discovery in 1888 of bones in the crypt of the cathedral thought to belong to Thomas Becket. The book offers a thorough overview of the evidence and circumstances of the discovery and encourages readers to draw their own conclusions.

Excerpt from What Became of the Bones of St. Thomas?: A Contribution to His Fifteenth Jubilee His Grace the present Archbishop of Canterbury some time ago expressed to me the wish that I would put together the documents bearing on the question whether the bones discovered in 1888 were those of his great predecessor or not. He was good enough to desire that my book on the Mission of St Augustine (Cambridge, 1897) should be taken as the model - that is, that the reader should have before him the documentary evidence in such a form as to be able to draw his own conclusions. This I have endeavoured to the best of my ability to do. To a certain extent I have departed from the model, in not giving the original everywhere in full, where a document is translated from the Latin. In the present shortage of paper it seemed wasteful to print many pages of Latin matter which is easily accessible to students, as in the case of the narratives of the Passion, or of Erasmus's Colloquies. The work has been delayed by many interruptions, but it is now issued in good time for the "Jubilee of St Thomas," - the fourteenth Jubilee of the Translation, the fifteenth of the Martyrdom. In January 1888, workmen excavating in the eastern crypt of Canterbury Cathedral discovered the bones of a skeleton many believed to be that of the martyred archbishop, Thomas Beckett. This book traces the full history of `Beckett's bones', from their alleged destruction by Henry VIII's commissioners during the Reformation to the present day. Includes fascinating observations, such as the unexpected discovery by workmen in 1865 of Dante's bones concealed in a wooden box a short distance from his empty tomb.
