Excerpt from West Virginia Wesleyan College Bulletin, 1970-71, Vol. 63 I greatly look forward to sharing the Wesleyan experience with you. In fact, I cannot tell you how proud and challenged I am to be President of West Virginia Wesleyan College. In this my first year on campus, I am full of enthusiasm and deter mination for our campus future together. To me, as well as many thousands of others, fest Virginia Wesleyan is special. We are fortunate here that our excellence of academic opportunity is offered in a personal way, in such intimate surroundings. This is truly rare today. At a time when men and women throughout the world are struggling to preserve a personal identity West Virginia Wesleyan offers a daily exploration of life and truth with people who care about the indi vidual. This is overwhelmingly important to the student and to our college community. I am proud of our traditions at the college. I am proud of the variety of experiences that we can offer the student in our quest to develop a community of strong and deep spiritual and ethical values and beliefs, a community of tolerance and innovation, a campus sensitive to, and responsive to, human problems, and a campus looking for further ways to serve not only our students, but also our community, state and nation. I seek excellence, as do you. Our academic standards, our cultural and athletic programs, our openness to one another, and our excitement about our own lives and opportunities - all of these bind us together at Wesleyan as we work together to maintain our traditions and to move with tolerance and understanding toward the future. For those of you who are new, you are welcome at Wesleyan. I am glad you are here. I want you to respect Wesleyan, and to like Wesleyan. Together we can ensure that Wesleyan always remains special. A Life Above Water is a cycle of poems that examines both the natural and human worlds and explores the boundaries between the two. The manuscript is concerned with personal ecologies and mythologies the ways that things are interconnected and the stories that we create to explain those connections. The manuscript is arranged in three concentric sections, each subsequent division nesting within the previous one. The reader is drawn into the broad, inclusive view of All These Indigestible Parts with its focus on the animals of the forest and birds of the air, the apparent cruelty of the natural world and that which is human about the animal through Fellowship and Baked Goods which looks at peopled communities and the ways we interact with one another, to the tighter, more personal focus of The Great Slowing and its themes of loss, shortcoming and redemption. The poems are individually free-standing and complete, but taken as a whole form a broad yet detailed portrait of the world around us and our place within it. By turns analytical, scientific, lyrical, whimsical and spiritual, A Life Above Water is a book that fits neatly into the canon of contemporary poetry while offering a unique, fresh and accessible perspective.
