Due to progress in the development of communication systems, it is now possible to develop low-cost wearable communication systems. A wearable antenna is meant to be a part of the clothing or close to the body and used for communication purposes, which include tracking and navigation, mobile computing and public safety. Examples include smartwatches (with integrated Bluetooth antennas), glasses (such as Google Glass with Wi-Fi and GPS antennas), GoPro action cameras (with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas), etc. They are increasingly common in consumer electronics and for healthcare and medical applications. However, the development of compact, efficient wearable antennas is one of the major challenges in the development of wearable communication and medical systems. Technologies such as printed compact antennas and miniaturization techniques have been developed to create efficient, small wearable antennas which are the main objective of this book. Each chapter covers enough mathematical detail and explanations to enable electrical, electromagnetic and biomedical engineers and students and scientists from all areas to follow and understand the topics presented. New topics and design methods are presented for the first time in the area of wearable antennas, metamaterial antennas and fractal antennas. The book covers wearable antennas, RF measurements techniques and measured results in the vicinity of the human body, setups and design considerations. The wearable antennas and devices presented in this book were analyzed by using HFSS and ADS 3D full-wave electromagnetics software. Explores wearable medical systems and antennas Explains the design and development of wearable communication systems Explores wearable reconfigurable antennas for communication and medical applications Discusses new types of metamaterial antennas and artificial magnetic conductors (AMC) Reviews textile antennas Dr. Albert Sabban holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder, USA (1991), and an MBA from the Faculty of Management, Haifa University, Israel (2005). He is currently a Senior Lecturer and researcher at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Kinneret and Ort Braude Engineering Colleges.

Wearable compact antennas are a major part of every wearable 5G communication system, IoT, and biomedical systems. Several types of printed antennas are employed as wearable antennas. Printed dipole, microstrip antennas, printed loops, slot antennas, and PIFA antennas are employed as wearable antennas. Compact efficient antennas significantly affect the electrical performance of wearable communication systems. In several communication and medical systems, the polarization of the received signal is not known. The polarization of the received signal may be vertical, horizontal, or circular polarized. In these systems, it is crucial to use dual-polarized receiving antennas. The antennas presented in this chapter may be linearly or dually polarized. Design trade-offs, simulation results, and measured results on human body of small wideband printed antennas with high efficiency are presented in this chapter. For example, the low-volume dually polarized antenna dimensions are 50¬†√ó¬†50¬†√ó¬†0.5¬†mm. The antenna beamwidth is around 100¬∞. The antennas gain is around 0,Äì4 dBi. Metamaterial technology is used to improve the electrical performance of wearable antennas. The proposed antennas may be used in wearable wireless communication and medical RF systems. The antennas,Äô electrical performance on human body is presented in this chapter.

A growing number of physical objects are being connected to the Internet at an unprecedented rate to realize the idea of the Internet of Things (IoT). Meanwhile, 5G (the fifth generation of cellular network technology) is considered an important enabler for the IoT, for the reason that 5G promises vast improvements over the current capabilities of 4G systems. Not only will it allow extremely fast data speeds and channel capacity with lower energy consumption, 5G will also enable latencies on the order of a millisecond. 5G features meet the needs of IoT scenarios which are mainly characterized by small data packets, a massive number of connections to devices with limited power sources, and delay tolerant communication. There are lots of application scenarios of IoT such as: self-driving cars, healthcare, logistics, smart homes & cities, and retail. All of these application systems require novel antennas as the intermediary between electromagnetic waves and binary data. Recongurable antennas, phased array antennas and wearable antennas are emerging technologies to address these IoT issues. Some of these new antenna technologies can be realized with newly developed fabrication technologies and materials. In this thesis, two novel types of antenna systems are introduced, and the radio frequency (RF) performance of a new two dimensional (2D) material MXene will be characterized. We will discuss how these new antenna technologies can potentially be leveraged for 5G IoT systems.
