Excerpt from Wave Action: In Relation to Engineering Structures It is therefore a source of regret to the writer that so little time was available, after these instruments were installed, for investigating their action during storms, and adopting such modifications or improvements in construction as might be shown to be desirable. It had been his intention not to submit the results of his observations upon shallow-water waves until he had secured much fuller observations with diaphragm dynamometers, but his assignment in the spring of 1903 to duties of a purely military character precluded the possibility of securing such observations, and it was therefore thought best to present what had thus far been obtained, hoping that others would continue investigations in this important field, which has been as yet so scantily covered. Breakwaters, generally paralleling the shore and with crests above high water, are works of known value for shore protection. Underwater structures, parallel to the beach to cut down wave action and increase stability of existing beaches for recreation are observed. A model study, to determine the effect under varied conditions of underwater sills upon wave heights and power of waves is made. (Author).

Coastal structures are an important component in any coastal protection scheme. They directly control wave and storm surge action or to stabilize a beach which provides protection to the coast. This book provides the most up-to-date technical advances on the design and construction of coastal structures and sea defenses.Written by renowned practicing coastal engineers, this edited volume focuses on the latest technology applied in planning, design and construction, effective engineering methodology, unique projects and problems, design and construction challenges, and other lessons learned. Many books have been written about the theoretical treatment of coastal and ocean structures. Much less has been written about the practical practice aspect of ocean structures and sea defenses. This comprehensive book fills the gap. It is an essential source of reference for professionals and researchers in the areas of coastal, ocean, civil, and geotechnical engineering.

The responses of offshore structures are significantly affected by steep nonlinear waves, currents and wind, leading to phenomena such as springing and ringing of TLPs, slow drift yaw motion of FPSOs and large oscillations of Spar platforms due to vortex shedding. Research has brought about significant progress in this field over the past few decades and introduced us to increasingly involved concepts and their diverse applicability. Thus, an in-depth understanding of steep nonlinear waves and their effects on the responses of offshore structures is essential for safe and effective designs. This book deals with analyses of nonlinear problems encountered in the design of offshore structures, as well as those that are of immediate practical interest to ocean engineers and designers. It presents conclusions drawn from recent research pertinent to nonlinear waves and their effects on the responses of offshore structures. Theories, observations and analyses of laboratory and field experiments are expounded such that the nonlinear effects can be clearly visualized.
