Excerpt from Water Power for the Farm and Country Home In the course of its general investigations of the water powers of the State, the Water Supply Commission has here tofore confined its attention to the possibilities for large develop ments, and the regulation of the How of rivers and large creeks. No previous or general investigation of small creeks and brooks and their power possibilities has been made, not because they were considered unimportant, but because the Commission believes that if the State decides to take an active part in the regulation of the flow of streams and the development and conservation of water powers, it should confine its first activities to the larger units, leaving the smaller opportunities for later examination and for private and individual development. However, no comprehensive system of conservation can meet with universal favor unless it contemplates the prevention of waste, great or small, and wherever found. Excerpt from Home Waterworks: A Manual of Water Supply in Country Homes The average American little needs advice on the conduct of his farm or business; or, if he thinks he does, a large supply of such help in farming and trading as books and periodicals can give, is available to him. But many a man who is well to do and knows how to continue to make money, is ignorant how to spend it in a way to bring to himself, and confer upon his wife and children, those conveniences, comforts and niceties which alone make money worth acquiring and life worth living. He hardly realizes that they are within his reach. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Farmstead, Vol. 2: The Making of the Rural Home and the Lay-Out of the Farm Professor Amos Cr. Warner says that chil dren reared in institutions are much below par because they lack the power Of initiative. The farm child has an incessant, varied and uncon scious training Of the eye, the hand, and the mind. While he is developing strength, sym metry, courage, the mental is being coordinated with the physical. The hand is made to Obey the will, while the fact that the handicraft is made useful lends Charm and delight to the work. The city child must try to learn, by a course Of manual training in some public school, what the country child picks up unconsciously in the natural process Of; play and work. After half a century, I look back to one Of the happiest moments Of my life, when I pre sented my mother with a dove-tailed wooden flower box, painted bright red. That flower box first taught me how to make wood take the form desired. While the flower box has long since rotted, the board-runner sled smashed, the water wheel broken, and the boat lies rotten in the bottom Of the lake, the time spent upon them was not thrown away, for they gave me the inspiration and power to boss wood, and this power has served me well in many an emergency.
