Excerpt from Washington Medical Annals, 1914, Vol. 13: Bimonthly Journal of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia Shock, as we understand it today, is essentially an excessive loss of the granular protoplasm of central nerve cells. An actual loss of the substance which constitutes the stored up energy of the nerve cells, just as lead salts constitute the stored energy of certain electric storage batteries. Part of this substance, which we call chromatin, because it stains readily with methylene blue, and some other stains, is normally oxidized and burned up with every discharge of nervous energy from the cell. It has long been known that a nerve cell Well stored with chrom atin granules will respond quickly and vigorously to slight stimuli, whereas a cell containing few chromatin granules responds more slowly and sluggishly, requires stronger stimuli to cause a dis charge or nerve impulse, and will fail to respond at all to any stimulus when the granules are exhausted. Excerpt from Washington Medical Annals (Bimonthly), 1909-10, Vol. 8: Including a Medical Miscellany After this statement, and after having become accustomed to the idea of Peters' ovum having been somewhere between three and eight days old, it is with some disappointment that we learn from Bryce and Teacher that their extremely young ovum was somewhere between thirteen and fourteen days of age, being the result of an abortion sixteen and one half days after coitus. The disappointment, however, is mitigated in some degree, when we find that the methods of calculation by which they determined the age of their own ovum, to be from thirteen to fourteen days would, if applied in the same manner to Peters' ovum, make that one a day older, viz fourteen to fifteen days. But even on this basis, the extremely young ovum of the authors is only one day younger than that of Peters. In most cases he says there is no evidence of ill health or discomfort, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Washington Medical Annals, 1910-11, Vol. 9: Bimonthly Journal of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia; Including a Medical Miscellany Sterilized air has been injected under pressure with the object of distending the cavity and keeping the intestines separated. While this method would keep the bowels apart in some places, it would probably force them in closer apposition in others and militate against the good results hoped for. Oxygen gas has been introduced in the same way, through a small rubber tube after the introduction of the last suture, which is tied immediately after the removal of the tube. This gas is supposed to have a specific effect on adhesions; but from the reports of experiments, one is impressed with the fact that the results are far from con elusive or convincing. Bainbridge (annals of Surgery, March, while admitting that final conclusions are impossible at this time, concludes that its use intra-abdominally diminishes shock, nausea, vomiting and hemorrhage, assists in preventing the formation of adhesions and, after they are broken up, lessens the likelihood of their return. Nitrogen has been tried and found of no value. For several years a favorite part of the technique Of some operators has been to fill the abdominal cavity with salt solution, and while this is of value in diluting morbid products and through rapid absorption in relieving thirst, it is far from certain that it has any positive effect in preventing adhesions. Sterile Olive Oil has been used in large quantities. Blake believes the adhesions are less extensive where oil is used. Most of the experimenters, however, find no efficacy in it, while others saw evidences of harm from a positive irritation and very slow absorption. Several weeks are sometimes required to effect its complete disappearance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
