The goal of the research was to understand key issues of vorticity dynamics prior to, during, and after the initiation of dynamic stall. The first portion of this work examined the of indicial theory to the predIction of dynamic applicability stall. The research focused on extending the semi-analytical formalism of indicial theory to predict the vorticity fluxes and the vorticity accumulation at the leading edge during unsteady maneuver. In the second portion of this work, highly accurate two-dimensional solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations were used on a model problem to investigate the Reynolds number scaling of incipient flow separation between Re =50,000 and Re = 800,000. This portion of the work was motivated by the suggestion that the appearance of eruptive plumes of vorticity at high Reynolds number might be critical to the formation of the dynamic stall vortex. The results of the research appear to contradict the hypothesis that a form of Reynolds number bifurcation must take place at some intermediate laminar Reynolds number. Instead, sell- similar behavior was observed, at least up to the time of formation of the primary stall vortex.

Dynamic separation has been investigated for various configurations and forcing dynamics. The details which differentiate 2-D vortex dynamics from those involving 3-D aspects were investigated. In addition, different dynamic stall control strategies have been tested. Keywords: Two-dimensional/three-dimensional flow; Flow separation; Flow visualization; Unsteady flow. (edc).

"This report consists of lecture notes of an AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel Special Course. These notes provide the latest information on the development and use of dynamic experiments in wind tunnels from several of the NATO nations. They address current oscillatory and rotary test techniques, experimental results for typical configurations, and the use of these data for flight mechanics applications. Subject included are: dynamic lift, wing rock, fluid dynamics of rotary flows, mathematical modelling, non-linear data representation, vortex manipulation for control enhancement, and correlations of predictions based on rotary and oscillatory wind-tunnel and flight-test results. The complete course notes are contained in two volumes. The main part of the notes is contained in AGARD Advisory Report 265 (ADA235179). The present volume includes papers on: Unsteady aerodynamics of slender wings; Dynamic stall effects and applications to high performance aircraft; Oscillatory test techniques; Large amplitude oscillations; Oscillatory data for typical configurations; and Forebody vortex control."--Stinet.

Stall and its consequences are fundamentally important to the design and operation of flight vehicles. A certain degree of unsteadiness always accompanies the flow over an airfoil or other streamlined body at high angle of attack, but the stall of a lifting surface undergoing unsteady motion is even more complex than static stall. Dynamic stall remains a major unsolved problem with a variety of current applications in aeronautics, hydrodynamics, and wind engineering. This report summarizes the main physical features of the phenomenon and the attempts that have been made to predict it. The information presented is drawn mainly from recent review articles and investigations by the author and his colleagues. Since a large fraction of the existing knowledge has come from experimental research, the details of dynamic stall are discussed principally in physical terms.

This book is a comprehensive and intensive monograph for scientists, engineers and applied mathematicians, as well as graduate students in fluid dynamics. It starts with a brief review of fundamentals of fluid dynamics, with an innovative emphasis on the intrinsic orthogonal decomposition of fluid dynamic process, by which one naturally identifies the content and scope of vorticity and vortex dynamics. This is followed by a detailed presentation of vorticity dynamics as the basis of later development. In vortex dynamics part the book deals with the formation, motion, interaction, stability, and breakdown of various vortices. Typical vortex structures are analyzed in laminar, transitional, and turbulent flows, including stratified and rotational fluids. Physical understanding of vertical flow phenomena and mechanisms is the first priority throughout the book. To make the book self-contained, some mathematical background is briefly presented in the main text, but major prerequisites are systematically given in appendices. Material usually not seen in books on vortex dynamics is included, such as geophysical vortex dynamics, aerodynamic vortical flow diagnostics and management.

The management of vortices and separation behind the bodies at high angles of attack is important for high maneuvrability of airplanes and other fluid dynamic apparatus. The recent international developments in the fundamental sciences and the application to the control of fluid behaviours were presented at the IUTAM Symposium on Fluid Dynamics of High Angle of Attack in September 1992 in Tokyo and documented in this volume.
