This book fills a long-recognized need for a comparative study of the anti-colonial movements in two countries not commonly combined within the same historical context. Different though Korea and Vietnam are in several ways, they both shared pasts that were similarly formative in molding the lives, careers, and thought of the two protagonists examined here. The book reveals how they not only dealt with the realities of their time, but also how, through history, philosophy, experience, emotion, and imagination, they came to deal with their countries' condition, and to envision the future and an alternative world order that have pertinence today.

Multifaceted inquiries were used in this study to deal to the fullest extent with the complexities of Pak and Phan and the time and situation in which they lived. In such an approach, totalizations, such as the "nation," which are heavily dependant upon European and American models, and which neglect many of the complexities of the East Asian environment, can be subjected to questioning.

Includes over 75 maps, photos and plans. The present volume describes the activities of the U.S. Army in Vietnam during World War II, military advice and assistance to the French government during the immediate post-war years, and the advisory program that developed after the Geneva Agreements of 1954. Its scope ranges from high-level policy decisions to low-echelon advisory operations in the field, presented against a background of relevant military and political developments. The author enjoyed access to the official records of the period and examined personal papers, interviews, other documentary sources, and miscellaneous published materials. Useful not only as a study of military assistance but as a view of the Army as an agent of national policy, this volume is a fitting introduction to the overall study of the conflict in Vietnam.

This book provides a history of anarchism in Korea and challenges conventional views of Korean anarchism as merely part of nationalist ideology, situating the study within a wider East Asian regional context. Dongyoun Hwang demonstrates that although the anarchist movement in Korea began as part of its struggle for independence from Japan, connections with anarchists and ideas from China and Japan gave the movement a regional and transnational dimension that transcended its initial nationalistic scope. Following the movement after 1945, Hwang shows how anarchism in Korea was deradicalized and evolved into an idea for both social revolution and alternative national development, with emphasis on organizing and educating peasants and developing rural villages.

The history of the 24th Infantry regiment in Korea is a difficult one, both for the veterans of the unit & for the Army. This book tells both what happened to the 24th Infantry, & why it happened. The Army must be aware of the corrosive effects of segregation & the racial prejudices that accompanied it. The consequences of the system crippled the trust & mutual confidence so necessary among the soldiers & leaders of combat units & weakened the bonds that held the 24th together, producing profound effects on the battlefield. Tables, maps & illustrations.
