The first edition of Vocational Psychology appeared in 1916; it aspired, within its narrow limits, to discuss mental measurement and to give illustrative tests and norms; to consider the formulable principles of vocational guidance; and to outline possibilities in the use of psychological methods in the selection and placement of workers. In 1922, under the title Judging Human Character, a supplementary volume was published, which surveyed some of the more recent developments, especially those concerned with the methods of appraising personal traits and qualities. Traditional methods were criticised and improvements suggested in the technique of applying and interpreting them. An endeavor was also made to communicate a general understanding of the principles underlying the methods of mental measurement. This revised edition not only combines the materials of the two earlier volumes, but seeks also to incorporate, in survey fashion, the more recent developments in the field of vocational psychology. Several entirely new topics have also been introduced, in the form of added chapters. Bibliographies are provided, in topical form, so that readers particularly interested in any of the special fields may be guided in their further study. The widespread interest in vocational psychology which has grown up in recent years, the eagerness with which even the most superficial and absurd systems of "character analysis" are being adopted and tried out, and especially the lack of references, offering conservative evaluation, to which inquirers may be directed, have made it seem advisable to publish the material in systematic form. The book is essentially a presentation of the problems and methods of that branch of applied psychology which deals with individual differences in mental constitution. In the present instance only those differences are considered which may seem to be significant in determining the individual's choice of a vocation, or in influencing the selection of workers from among a group of applicants or candidates. It is the writer's hope that the book may be suggestive to the individual who seeks to know himself better, helpful to the student and parent who may desire to avoid the wiles of the charlatan, encouraging to the investigator or counsellor who is engaged in carrying forward the solution of vocational problems, and useful to the practical man who may be mainly interested in surrounding himself with competent associates and employees.

In the present volume Professor Hollingworth makes a distinctive and notable contribution to applied psychology: determining the qualities of men with reference to their fitness for the work of the world. Central in interest and promise stands the psychological test. Professor Hollingworth presents the results of such testing, both in relation to the variety of human traits and in the grading of individuals by reference to the measure of the quality which each possesses. Written by international experts, the book opens by identifying some of the “tributaries” that flow into the “great delta of careers scholarship”, and noting the need to link what are at present separate “islands” of scholarship. It is structured to allow comparison between the ways in which the two perspectives address career development and career management theory, research and interventions.
