The problem of mass blindness today stems largely from cataract which accounts for a total of 40 million cataract victims in the world — and it will worsen with the ageing population. Fortunately, this problem can be resolved with cost effective extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) and posterior chamber implantation (PCI).This book highlights how the use of ECCE and PCI can restore normal vision to cataract victims around the world.A successful approach is to establish training centres. The success of the International Intraocular Implant Training Centre (IIITC) in the Peoples' Republic of China is cited to show that implant surgery for cataracts can be successfully performed in communities in developing nations in Asia with appropriate training and supervision. The centre has since yielded excellent results with cost effective ECCE and PCI. The book challenges eye surgeons around the world to unite to address a global need to contain world cataract blindness.

The book is about a global mission against world cataract blindness. It highlights the resistance of some world organizations to changes, particularly the shift from ICCE to ECCE with PCI, and how they have relented over the years. It also highlights the success of cataract/implant training centres in China, especially in Tianjin. The book will be of interest to anyone involved in providing eye care, and may be of special interest to those dealing with blinding diseases including cataract.

Unoperated cataract is the cause of millions of cases of visual impairment and blindness in poor populations throughout both the developing and the developed world. This wonderfully written volume shares the experiences of a team of surgeons who have demonstrated how the surgical procedures can be simplified and made more efficient, accessible, and far less expensive. It is a step-by-step manual to solving the problem where adequate surgeons can be trained to follow suit. Subject matter ranges from ways to increase demand among those who need surgery to the organization of surgical services, responsibilities among different personnel, efficient layout of clinical facilities, and how to sustain services at the least cost to those who need it most. The basic lessons in this volume will remain pertinent for decades to come and provide a blueprint worthy of mass replication.

The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.

This book explores what motivates eye doctors to heal among the world's poor, and why this kind of service strikes us so deeply. It combines the topics of medicine, public health, and medical ethics across cultures, including Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, Kenya, India, China, Pakistan, and the United States. The first chapter, "Charity, an extended definition" is a discussion of contemporary and traditional notions of charity in the religious and cultural settings where the doctors are serving. "Caring and curing: The physician in the community" explores how medicine has traditionally served a community and the problems Western, particularly American doctors perceive in maintaining that tradition. "The eye" is a tribute to the marvel and complexity of the eye, including its physiological, clinical, and metaphorical aspects. The "Exempla" section is the bulk of the book, containing personal stories of ophthalmologists in eight countries who are treating the poor, medical data on each country, descriptions of the physical and cultural settings that color their work, and the author's own reactions. There is a wide range of physicians here--missionaries, those in private practice including some from privileged backgrounds, survivors of the Cultural Revolution in China, a distinguished Hindu family in India. This book offers excellent reading for a variety of medical school classes, public health programs, courses in international medicine and courses in medical ethics. Restoring Vision will also appeal to physicians in private practice and trainees for foreign service.
