This book shows clearly how the study of concrete control systems has motivated the development of the mathematical tools needed for solving such problems. In many cases, by using this apparatus, far-reaching generalizations have been made, and its further development will have an important effect on many fields of mathematics. In the book a way is demonstrated in which the study of the Watt flyball governor has given rise to the theory of stability of motion. The criteria of controllability, observability, and stabilization are stated. Analysis is made of dynamical systems, which describe an autopilot, spacecraft orientation system, controllers of a synchronous electric machine, and phase-locked loops. The Aizerman and Brockett problems are discussed and an introduction to the theory of discrete control systems is given.

I have taught a variety of courses in biomechanics, introductory and advanced, at multiple universities in Canada. I have not been able to find or use an appropriate textbook for students whose background is not biomedical engineering. It should be noted that there are many outstanding books on biomechanics; however, they are usually not very introductory or the topics covered are too detailed, which makes it impossible for those audiences to make effective use of the book. The present book is an attempt to fill this gap. No previous familiarity of anatomy, biology, or physiology is expected, and in fact every chapter begins with a review of the relevant necessary background. Each chapter then highlights identification and explanation of the indispensable aspects of the associated biomechanics issues.

Localized Dynamics of Thin-Walled Shells

Localized Dynamics of Thin-Walled Shells focuses on localized vibrations and waves in thin-walled structures with variable geometrical and physical characteristics. It emphasizes novel asymptotic methods for solving boundary-value problems for dynamic equations in the shell theory, in the form of functions which are highly localized near both fixed and moving lines/points on the shell surface. Features First-of-its-kind work, synthesizing knowledge of the localization of vibrations and waves in thin-walled shells with a mathematical tool to study them Suitable for researchers working on the dynamics of thin shells and also as supplementary reading for undergraduates studying asymptotic methods Offers detailed analysis of wave processes in shells with varying geometric and physical parameters
