Put the various attempts I made to secure a competent translator were abortive, and the appearance meanwhile in America of Tnnison's corresponding (and highly interesting) volume The Author of the AEneid as he seemed in the Middle Ages made any immediate publication of the earlier and far greater work unnecessary. When at last, two years ago, Mr. Benecke volunteered to undertake the translation, I at once seized the opportunity thus presented, and urged him to lose no time in setting about the task. Mr. Benecke has accomplished it sooner than might have been expected; indeed, with an almost marvellous celerity.
