Army vehicle washing operations, washing facilities, and the wastewater discharges resulting from these activities were surveyed at Fort Drum, NY. On the basis of survey data and information supplied by post personnel, a concept design and cost estimates were prepared for a new consolidated washrack facility to replace existing on-post facilities. The recommended design incorporates hand-held, high-pressure/low-volume wash hoses for tracked vehicles and fixed-nozzle drive-through facilities for wheeled tactical equipment. The centralized wastewater treatment system proposed for the facility consists of a sedimentation basin equipped for mechanical free oil removal followed by filtration through a polishing filter. The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Download Urban Stormwater Management in the United States Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.
