London Poor, is a novel about love in a time of poverty and inspiration. The protagonist an Igbo born in Merseyside and brought up in Belfast by professional parents who seeks a career as a young man in London, but falls into despair and becomes an artist fighting demons and dreams alike. He meets Sibby a Jamaican English woman younger than he with the merest blush of almond skin. She is a curator at the Courtauld where he falls in love. The two of them through ordinary days explore their sexuality, inhibitions, and prejudices, and aspire to joy, pure joy. as the novel unfolds through the arts and work, and home and street life, London becomes a place where a man might save his soul and a woman be taken to paradise. There is nothing artificial about this novel, it is a work of fiction, but realistic in nature. Strengths: Vivid description, juxtapositions - “I was burning with lust and fear, as a mentally insane, unemployed upper middle class” (9) - “My heart felt so big, it filled the whole room, I thought I was in love; with this Nwoke or a moment!” (27). - “The charcoal snapped several times and the portrait looked like a jigsaw of, eyes, nose, mouth, cheeks, chin and forehead, and lips” (34-35).

A handbook for the herpetologist professional, student, or amateur anxious to acquaint himself with African Amphibia. The geographic location and climatic variety of Malawi make it possible for this small country to support a large number of frogs and toads, many of them representative of much of sub-Sahara Africa. This book contributes greatly to the relatively sparse literature on African Amphibia. Professor Stewart bases her book on extensive field notes made during a year s stay in Malawi, supplemented by museum and literature research. A talented draftsman as well as a trained biologist, she has provided over sixty detailed drawings to accompany her species descriptions. In addition, twenty full-color photographs illustrate some of the more striking varieties. The species descriptions note not only distinguishing features for identification, but provide full information on life history and habits. The book contains a key for identification of the species covered, generic characteristics, a glossary, a bibliography, a systematic index of species as well as a general index. The student and amateur herpetologist will be particularly interested in Dr. Stewart s introduction which discusses the background of amphibian studies in Malawi and the whys and hows of amphibian studies in general. This includes what an amphibian is, notes on classification, and how to collect, record, and identify frogs. Throughout the book, she points the student to area where more knowledge is needed and unsolved problems remain."

Much of this occult sequel to Respect for the Dead is set over a two-year period in New England and centers on the spiritual awakening of a sorcerer whose identity is concealed for thematic purposes. He learns that before his present incarnation he had cut a deal with God and Satan to wipe out their common enemies in exchange for a successful writing career¾a dangerous test of endurance, paralleling Castaneda's horrifying experiences with sorcery in Mexico.
