The study of pilot personality has a long and controversial history. Personality characteristics are fairly poor predictors of training completion, but are probably better predictors of operational performance. Personality characteristics are also important considerations in clinical psychological assessment. The current paper describes the personality characteristics of 1301 US Air Force students pilots based on the NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R). Compared to male adult norms, male student pilots had higher levels of extraversion and lower levels of agreeableness. Compared to female adult norms, female student pilots had higher levels of extraversion and higher levels of openness as well as lower levels of agreeableness. Percentile tables for the five domain scores and 30 facet scales are provided and discussed for clinical use. A case study is also provided as an example of the clinical utility of these US Air Force norms.

The revised NEO personality inventory (NEO-PI-R) measuring the 'big five' personality domains has been used as a descriptive tool for assessing 'normal' personality attributes of Air Force pilots; yet the predictive potential of NEO-PI-R has not been realized. An opportunity to transform the NEO-PI-R into a predictive instrument has been provided by the recent collection of data from the U.S. Air Force's Enhanced Flight Screening Program. This paper describes a technique used to provide a practical and intuitive method of predicting whether a student pilot with a particular profile on the NEO-PI-R will be successful in training.

"The general personality of pilots, the variability of personality within pilots, and the personality traits associated with success in pilot training are well known. However, no research has looked at the "upstream" pipeline personality. The current research examines personality differences as a function of commissioning source in male U.S. Air Force (USAF) pilots using two different personality tests, the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised and the Armstrong Laboratory Aviation Personality Survey. While future pilots receive their commissions through various commissioning programs, all USAF student pilots (pilot candidates) train together irrespective of their commissioning source. On the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised, those student pilots being commissioned based on graduation from the USAF Academy were the most open to new experience, agreeable, and the least extraverted and the least conscientious. Reserve Officers' Training Corps student pilots were more extraverted than the other two groups. Finally, Officer Training School (OTS) student pilots were the least neurotic and the most conscientious. Personality differences were also found across all commissioning sources on the Armstrong Laboratory Aviation Personality Survey. USAF Academy pilots were the most negativistic, affectively labile, anxious, depressed, dogmatic, and impulsive. They were also significantly lower than the other two groups on confidence, socialness, orderliness, team oriented, and organization. Reserve Officers' Training Corps student pilots were generally between the other two groups on most variables. Officer Training School student pilots were seen as orderly and organized with the lowest negativity, affective lability, anxiety, depression, and dogmatism of the three groups. Successful pilots must be cognitively and psychologically "fit' to preserve cockpit situational awareness while executing complex job demands in an unforgiving environment. The neuropsychological attributes of successful U.S. Air Force (USAF) aircrew, however, are largely unstudied. To conveniently collect a large sample of aviators data for comparison to mission performance, an easy-to-use and reliable test delivery system is required. The Neuropsychiatrically Enhanced Flight Screening (N-EFS) program is one product of an effort by Armstrong Laboratory's (AL) Neuropsychiatry Branch (AOCN). N-EFS measures the cognitive functioning (using the Multidimensional Aptitude Battery, MAB; and CogScreen) and psychological attributes and crew resource management potential (using the Personal Characteristics Inventory PCI; and the Revised NEO-Personality Inventory, NEO-PI-R) of all USAF pilot candidates. This data will establish a range of cognitive attributes of pilot applicants, and will provide MAB CogScreen baseline data for future reference. The N-EFS program also seeks to validate the MAB, CogScreen, NEO-PI-R. and PCI as future tools for pilot selection and understanding situational awareness. N-EFS builds on earlier AL/AOCN efforts to develop a field-friendly' self-administered, computerized psychometric testing battery to define attributes of successful pilots.

From the editor: "71F, or "71 Foxtrot," is the AOC (area of concentration) code assigned by the U.S. Army to the specialty of Research Psychology. Qualifying as an Army research psychologist requires, first of all, a Ph.D. from a research (not clinical) intensive graduate psychology program. Due to their advanced education, research psychologists receive a direct commission as Army officers in the Medical Service Corps at the rank of captain. In terms of numbers, the 71F AOC is a small one, with only 25 to 30 officers serving in any given year. However, the 71F impact is much bigger than this small cadre suggests. Army research psychologists apply their extensive training and expertise in the science of psychology and social behavior toward understanding, preserving, and enhancing the health, well being, morale, and performance of Soldiers and military families. As is clear throughout the pages of this book, they do this in many ways and in many areas, but always with a scientific approach. This is the 71F advantage: applying the science of psychology to understand the human dimension, and developing programs, policies, and products to benefit the person in military operations. This book grew out of the April 2008 biennial conference of U.S. Army Research Psychologists, held in Bethesda, Maryland. ABSTRACT: The ipsative analysis revealed significant relative strengths in Information and Digit Symbol and a relative weakness in Picture Arrangement. The NEO-PI-R results revealed statistically higher scores on Extraversion (High range), and lower scores on Neuroticism (Average range) and Agreeableness (Low range) as compared to the normative sample. This study fills a void in the literature on rated USAF fighter pilots, updates the current literature base with a more recent sample, and utilizes measures commonly administered by civilian and military psychologists in aeromedical evaluations of USAF fighter pilots. Results from this study are reviewed in the context of a case example providing application of the data presented.
