A significant effort has recently been initiated to address probabilistic issues within radiological Performance Assessments (PA's) conducted at the Savannah River Site (SRS). This effort is considered to be part of a continual process, as is the program of PA analysis and maintenance across the Department of Energy (DOE) complex. At SRS, findings in the initial probabilistic analysis of the Slit Trenches in the E-Area PA were built upon and improved in the later development of the probabilistic model for the F-Area Tank Farm. Within the PA studies conducted at SRS, the initial effort of the uncertainty analyses was focused on the Slit Trenches as part of the E-Area PA. Specifically, a probabilistic model was developed for Slit Trench 5 within the E-Area. This model was utilized in deterministic mode to compare its results against the 2- and 3-D model results of the deterministic models. Then, utilizing the PDFs, the model was used to perform multiple realizations and produce probabilistic results. Later, a second probabilistic sensitivity and uncertainty analysis was undertaken for the F-Area Tank Farm PA. This effort is currently underway. Many improvements were made in how the flow and transport processes were incorporated within this model.

An initial uncertainty analysis of the Performance Assessment (PA) model of the Savannah River Site (SRS) trench disposal unit was conducted. Selected input data values were varied for both flow and transport analyses to generate input sets called realizations. Outputs of fluxes to the water table and well concentrations were compared to results from the PA. This stage of the uncertainty analysis served as a prototype for future work. The focus was to lay the foundation for a more comprehensive analysis, generate a limited set of output results, and learn about the process and potential problems.

The monograph addresses a problem of stochastic analysis based on the uncertainty assessment by simulation and application of this method in ecology and steel industry under uncertainty. The first chapter defines the Monte Carlo (MC) method and random variables in stochastic models. Chapter two deals with the contamination transport in porous media. Stochastic approach for Municipal Solid Waste transit time contaminants modeling using MC simulation has been worked out. The third chapter describes the risk analysis of the waste to energy facility proposal for Konin city, including the financial aspects. Environmental impact assessment of the ArcelorMittal Steel Power Plant, in Kraków – in the chapter four – is given. Thus, four scenarios of the energy mix production processes were studied. Chapter five contains examples of using ecological Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) – a relatively new method of environmental impact assessment – which help in preparing pro-ecological strategy, and which can lead to reducing the amount of wastes produced in the ArcelorMittal Steel Plant production processes. Moreover, real input and output data of selected processes under uncertainty, mainly used in the LCA technique, have been examined. The last chapter of this monograph contains final summary. The log-normal probability distribution, widely used in risk analysis and environmental management, in order to develop a stochastic analysis of the LCA, as well as uniform distribution for stochastic approach of pollution transport in porous media has been proposed. The distributions employed in this monograph are assembled from site-specific data, data existing in the most current literature, and professional judgment.

The System of Environmental-Economic Accounting for Water, commonly referred to as SEEA-Water, is a conceptual framework for the organization of physical and economic information, developed with the purpose of providing an integrated conceptual framework to support water policy design and evaluation. SEEA-Water is a subsystem of the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA), which provides internationally agreed standards for the compilation of measures about the environment and its interactions with the economy.
