With a forward written by Luis Ayala, former Director of Property Development for GSA Region 7. If you like this book, please leave positive review. U.S. Courts Design Guide (2007) and the complimentary document the Standard Level Features and Finishes for U.S. Courts Facilities (1996) The standards in this edition of the U.S. Courts Design Guide (USCDG) are applicable to the design and construction of new buildings and annexes; all new leases; and repair and alteration projects in which new space, including courtrooms and chambers, is planned for an entire court unit. This book includes the complementary document to the United States Courts Design Guide, the Standard Level Features and Finishes for U.S. Courts Facilities (Revised March 1996). This document establishes the baseline standard level of features and finishes for U.S. Courts facilities that are funded by the General Services Administration (GSA). It serves to clarify court planning and design issues in the USCDG based on GSA''s policies. Why buy a book you can download for free? First you gotta find it and make sure it''s the latest version, not always easy. Then you gotta print it using a network printer you share with 100 other people - and its outta paper - and the toner is low (take out the toner cartridge, shake it, then put it back). If it''s just 10 pages, no problem, but if it''s a 250-page book, you will need to punch 3 holes in all those pages and put it in a 3-ring binder. Takes at least an hour. An engineer that''s paid $75 an hour has to do this himself (who has assistant''s anymore?). If you are paid more than $10 an hour and use an ink jet printer, buying this book will save you money. It''s much more cost-effective to just order the latest version from Amazon.com This public domain material is published by 4th Watch Books. The Democratic Courthouse examines how changing understandings of the relationship between government and the governed came to be reflected in the buildings designed to house the modern legal system from the 1970s to the present day in England and Wales. The book explores the extent to which egalitarian ideals and the pursuit of new social and economic rights altered existing hierarchies and expectations about how people should interact with each other in the courthouse. Drawing on extensive public archives and private archives kept by the Ministry of Justice, but also using case studies from other jurisdictions, the book details how civil servants, judges, lawyers, architects, engineers and security experts have talked about courthouses and the people that populate them. In doing so, it uncovers a changing history of ideas about how the competing goals of transparency, majesty, participation, security, fairness and authority have been achieved, and the extent to which aspirations towards equality and participation have been realised in physical form. As this book demonstrates, the power of architecture to frame attitudes and expectations of the justice system is much more than an aesthetic or theoretical nicety. Legal subjects live in a world in which the configuration of space, the cues provided about behaviour by the built form and the way in which justice is symbolised play a crucial, but largely unacknowledged, role in creating meaning and constituting legal identities and rights to participate in the civic sphere. Key to understanding the modern-day courthouse, this book will be of interest to scholars and students in all fields of law, architecture, sociology, political science, psychology and criminology.
