Excerpt from Howard University Record, Vol. 3: November, 1909 I am far from saying - and I wish to put in this caveat in advance, in Order notto be met by an argument which, has, Weight but has not weight when improperly used - that the colored race today. All of them, _would be-better Off if they all had university education. I think they would be in a very bad way if they had, because they would not know how to use it, andthey. Would not find, means of using it.. No race Would be better off if they were all educated as university men. The great body of the Colored race, as the great body of the white race, must depend for their livelihood upon their manual labor, skilled or unskilled, or upon some occupation which requires less education than that which is conferred by a university, and if it is too widely extended the effect of it is to put a lot of men into life who do not find occupations which are suited to their taste, and to make them unhappy and really not fit for the life which is before them. The University of Alabama (UA) is one of the most prominent universities in the US. Volume One of this series explored UA’s birth, formative years, its burning by Union soldiers, and its rebirth in 1871. Volume Two noted the adolescent years of the school, rebellion by the students against the military system of government, the rise of a student culture via the admission of women, and a nascent men’s sports program. This third volume explores rising enrollment and a new style of student governance. The book investigates how UA dealt with student smoking, cursing, and hazing. It covers how UA became nationally respected academically, the rise of a successful sports program, the first use of the phrase “Crimson Tide,” the history of the Million Dollar Band and how “Yea, Alabama” became the school fight song, the UA/Auburn rift, and the UA response to WWI and to the women’s rights movement.

Excerpt from The University of Texas Record, Vol. 3: September, 1901 Though we can know little about what the century will be as its long day wears on, we do know that at its dawn it is essentially an age of young people, an age gone mad in its demand for young men and women in the places of responsibility and trust which experi ence and accumulated years ought to hold. This abnormal clamor for youth in positions of power and prominence has its resulting perils. Not long ago Frank Beard, the genius who prepares the cartoons that adorn the first page of that quaint combination of humor and piety, The Ram's Horn, drew the picture of a stalwart young man, resolute of purpose and eager to hold beyond the reach of a clamorous company of enemies, each of who-m was reaching for it, the crown he held in his upraised right hand. Upon that crown was inscribed the Single word, character, and they who would have wrested it from his grasp were personified covetousness, licentiousness, love of popularity, and the rest of a long line Of the temptations peculiar to young men of the present. It was no fancy picture, but a portrait. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
