This book provides a unique historical perspective on expectations in economic theory, and applications of expectations models in economic history. Based on papers presented at the 2017 Thomas Guggenheim Conference, it brings together the work of economists, historians of economics, and economic historians on issues and events concerning expectations in economics and economic history. The contributions address: (i) the history of expectations models; (ii) growth, expectations and political economy; (iii) controversies regarding expectations methods and models; (iv) expectations in theory and reality; and (v) expectations in economic history. The book opens with a lecture by Thomas Guggenheim Prize winner Duncan Foley on the evolution of expectations in modern economic thought. The remaining content is divided into two parts, the first of which focuses on the utilization of expectations in the “ancient” and “meso” periods of high theory, i.e., from Smithian to Keynesian approaches. The papers cover topics such as “modern” applications of expectations in both “Tobinesque-Phillips” and “Harrodian-Solowian” contexts, and the debate between Friedmanite and Keynesian approaches to expectation formation. In turn, the last part presents essays on the role of economic expectations in connection with historical events and contexts, ranging from the early 20th century to World War II, and on the application of expectations theory to hyperinflation and stabilization, taking Israel as a case study.

Unfulfilled Expectations examines the home and family characteristics, school teaching practices, and family-school relationships that affect the literacy development of low-income children. Eschewing comparisons across social class, the authors focus exclusively on an ethnically diverse group of low-income children in grades two, four, and six, the thirty-two subjects of an intensive two-year study and a follow-up study five years later. The authors pinpoint the diverse home factors that can explain differential achievement by youngsters from the same socioeconomic background. These include the familys own uses of literacy, their attitudes toward and communication with the schools, their social networks, their rules and schedules, and their susceptibility to economic and psychological stress. The book challenges assumptions about low-income families commitment to and interest in their childrens schooling and offers valuable recommendations for parents, teachers, and administrators to ensure that low-income children fulfill their early promise.

Discouragement or depression is real and personal. While separate, the two moods have a definite tie between them. The stages of the discouragement lead naturally to the forming of the depression. While discouragement reflects an attitude of dismay and depression reflects darkness of the soul, both begin with the word distraction. Many are concerned with depression to the neglect of discouragement. Yet to deal with depression before discouragement is like "putting the cart before the horse!" For these reasons, the author believes it is essential to deal first with the subject of discouragement. If discouragement is handled God's way, it will go a long way to divert or stop the path to depression. Discouragement and depression have similar causes and solutions. Moreover, there is "one key operative word" connected with both, which is "response." This book provides insights on the kind of response necessary for handling the force of both subjects. Robert A. Hanson has served as pastor of Bible Baptist Church in Plymouth, Massachusetts for thirty-six years. He also served as senior chaplain for Plymouth County Jail and Correctional Facility for twenty-two years. The Church under his ministry has enjoyed the blessing of seeing a number enter the ministry with ten serving as Pastors. Robert received his education at Providence Barrington Bible College, Talbot Theological Seminary, Los Angeles Theological Seminary, and The Graduate School of Theology in California. Beyond pastoring four churches in New England and California, he has taught in both college and seminary. His travels have taken him to many parts of the world including India as part of an extension-teaching ministry. Robert and his wife Barbara conduct "Straight to the Heart" and "Road to Renewal" conferences in various churches. The Hansons have five children and seventeen grandchildren.

First off, let me start by saying congratulations! By picking up this book, you've already taken the first step on an incredible journey. A journey that, I promise you, is more exciting than finding money in your old coat pocket and more rewarding than finally mastering the art of parallel parking. Now, I know what you might be thinking. "Another self-help book? Isn't this just going to tell me to do yoga, drink green smoothies, and journal my feelings?" Well, hold onto your skepticism, my friend, because this isn't your average, run-of-the-mill, cookie-cutter guide to inner peace. This book is a rollercoaster ride through the landscape of human emotions - but don't worry, it's the kind of rollercoaster that's more exhilarating than terrifying, and you won't need a barf bag (though keep some tissues handy, because we might hit you in the feels a few times). What's In Store for You? In the pages that follow, we're going to embark on a grand adventure. We'll traverse the peaks of joy, wade through the valleys of sorrow, and navigate the winding paths of everything in between. Along the way, we'll: Explore the art of letting go (spoiler alert: it's not just about decluttering your closet) Learn how to embrace change without feeling like you're free-falling without a parachute Discover how to love yourself, flaws and all (yes, even that weird thing you do when you're nervous) Master the ninja-like skills of emotional resilience And ultimately, find a path to true emotional freedom (no, this doesn't mean you'll never feel sad again - we're aiming for freedom, not robotic indifference) Who is This Book For? This book is for you if: You've ever felt stuck, like you're running on a hamster wheel of emotions You find yourself replaying arguments in your head, coming up with perfect comebacks weeks too late Your emotional baggage is so heavy, you'd have to pay extra if emotions were airlines You want to feel more in control of your reactions, instead of feeling like a puppet to your feelings You're ready for a change, but the idea of change also makes you want to hide under your blanket You're curious about this whole "emotional freedom" thing, but you're pretty sure it's just for monks and people who do yoga at 5am In other words, this book is for humans. Imperfect, messy, beautiful humans who are doing their best to navigate this wild ride we call life. A Word of Warning Now, I feel it's my duty to warn you: this journey isn't always going to be easy. There will be moments when you'll want to throw this book across the room (please don't, unless you're reading the e-book version, in which case, throw away). There will be times when you'll face uncomfortable truths about yourself. You might cry. You might laugh. You might do both at the same time and worry about your sanity. But here's the thing: that's all part of the process. Growth isn't always comfortable, but it's always worth it. And I promise you, the view from the other side is spectacular. My Promise to You As we embark on this journey together, here's what I promise you: I will be honest with you, even when it's uncomfortable I will challenge you, but I will never leave you hanging I will share real, practical strategies that you can apply in your everyday life I will respect your intelligence and won't sugar-coat things I will do my best to make this journey not just enlightening, but also enjoyable (prepare for dad jokes and pop culture references) Are You Ready? So, dear reader, are you ready to embark on this adventure? Are you ready to laugh, to cry, to grow, and to discover a version of yourself that's freer and more authentically you than you ever thought possible?
