Nine year old Kate is very scared when her dad Sam is badly injured in a car accident. But then she meets some special friends and things take a strange and magical turn... About the Author: Born in Sydney, I've enjoyed playing with words and creating stories most of my life, usually writing about whatever is inspiring me at the time. A few short stories and articles have been published over the years, Under the Ghost Gum Tree my first children's story. Definitely born with a fair amount of 'gypsy blood' coursing through my veins, I've travelled and lived in different places in Australia and overseas working in various roles such as registered nurse, massage therapist, horse trainer, carer, Yoga teacher, gardener, among many others. A few years ago I was inspired to head south to Tasmania to write my latest children's story. Since then my partner David, intrepid small black poodle Ebony and I have been living the gypsy life on this magnificent southern island, going wherever that wind blows us. Jenny Nestor, gifted Melbourne artist and writer came into my life to illustrate Under the Ghost Gum Tree, and thankfully she's still in it! About the Illustrator: Jenny Nestor spent her childhood in Central Victoria then trained in Drawing and Etching at Victoria College in Melbourne. Though not formally trained as an Illustrator she has worked in this field on various projects for many years. Her artwork has been exhibited in both solo and group shows in Australia and overseas.

This second edition of Australian Bird Names is a completely updated checklist of Australian birds and the meanings behind their common and scientific names, which may be useful, useless or downright misleading! For each species, the authors examine the many-and-varied common names and full scientific name, with derivation, translation and a guide to pronunciation. Stories behind the name are included, as well as relevant aspects of biology, conservation and history. Original descriptions, translated by the authors, have been sourced for many species. As well as being a book about names, this is a book about the history of the ever-developing understanding of birds, about the people who contributed to this understanding and, most of all, about the birds themselves. This second edition has been revised to follow current taxonomy and understanding of the relationships between families, genera and species. It contains new taxa, updated text and new vagrants and will be interesting reading for anyone with a love of birds, words or the history of Australian biology and bird-watching.

No matter where you look in Australia, you're more than likely to see a eucalyptus tree. Scrawny or majestic, smooth as pearl or rough as a pub brawl, they have defined a continent for thousands of years, and they continue to shape our imagination. First Nations Australians have long known the abilities of the eucalyptus. And as part of the raft of changes wrought by the arrival of colonial Australia, botanists have battled in a race to count, classify and own the species - a battle that has lasted more than two hundred years. Gum: The Story of Eucalypts and Their Champions is the story of that battle and of so many other eucalyptographers - explorers, poets, painters, foresters, conservationists, scientists (and engine drivers) - who have also been obsessed by these trees and who have championed their powers. Gum trees have been feted as a cure for malaria, as a solution for the drainage problems that defeated the Roman emperors, as the tree that could forest the Sahara, the tree that could divine gold. This new edition of Gum, from award-winning author Ashley Hay, is a powerful and lyrical exploration of these magical, mythical, medicinal trees, and the story of new worlds, curious people and big ideas.

Mike Sullivan loves his adopted city of San Francisco, and he loves trees. In The Trees of San Francisco he has combined his passions, offering a striking and handy compendium of botanical information, historical tidbits, cultivation hints, and more. Sullivan's introduction details the history of trees in the city, a fairly recent phenomenon. The text then piques the reader's interest with discussions of 71 city trees. Each tree is illustrated with a photograph--with its common and scientific names prominently displayed--and its specific location within San Francisco, along with other sites; frequently a close-up shot of the tree is included. Sprinkled throughout are 13 sidelights relating to trees; among the topics are the city's wild parrots and the trees they love; an overview of the objectives of the Friends of the Urban Forest; and discussions about the link between Australia's trees and those in the city, such as the eucalyptus. The second part of the book gets the reader up and about, walking the city to see its trees. Full-page color maps accompany the seven detailed tours, outlining the routes; interesting factoids are interspersed throughout the directions. A two-page color map of San Francisco then highlights 25 selected neighborhoods ideal for viewing trees, leading into a checklist of the neighborhoods and their trees.
