Excerpt from Under Rocking Skies Suddenly he leaned forward with quick ened interest as the door Of his neighbor's house opened, and there stepped forth a short, stout man of sixty, who stood a mo ment for a last word and then hurried down the boxwood-lined path. He, too, was clearly a sailor: he walked with his feet far apart, like a man SO habituated to the rolling deck that it seemed a waste of time and energy to alter his gait on the rare occasions when he trod the firm ground. Medbury perceived that his face wore a look Of placid satisfac tion, and with the tightening Of the lines Of his own to an unspoken resolution, he hurried through the house and across the yard, and, vaulting the low dividing fence, approached his neighbor's back door. Excerpt from Under Blue Skies: And Other Stories Most people believe they have a right to existence, because they have a certain mission in the world - a particular work to do. This is true. Some solve life's problem in the kitchen, or on the street; others in the hovel, or in the mansion; and some upon the sea. Everywhere human beings toil for the right to live, and like the stars they move in certain order, and keep to one particular line of duty, and thus become fixed cogs in the great wheel of life. Not so with the author of this book. It is with much hesitancy that I undertake a sketch of her life and work, for her personality is so marked, her gifts so many and varied, her labors range over such wide fields, that it is difficult to follow her career, or to portray the character of one who has been lecturer, reader, and teacher, and, to crown all, possesses the spiritual gifts of clairvoyancy and healing that St. Paul speaks of in I. Corinthians. Unlike the proverbial "Jack of all trades, but master of none," she has been mistress in every capacity in which she has served. Agnes Houghton Banfield was born in Vermont. Do you ask when? Well, the birds of the Green Mountain State will tell you, for they surely sang about her cradle, and in the twilight hours hushed her to sleep with lullabies of perfect melody - melody that sank into her heart and reproduced itself in her voice, for never was heard a voice of greater natural beauty, or more musical intonation than hers. Excerpt from Under Western Skies: Poems Now on the field the starry hordes appear And sow the glooming vault with crystal sprays, Far diamond treasures hung belike in praise Of some fair astral goddess drawing near. High in the opal north, as if in fear The polar sentinel's pale face displays The Signal of the night, and all ablaze \vith brilliant dyes the Evening Star stands clear. And now a beryl blush o'erspreads the East, A cheering glow adorns the twinkling crowds, The myriad eyes seem symbols of Delight Like some fair queen parading to the feast, Slow gliding up among the jeweled clouds, Triumphant rides the Mistress of the Night! Rock music of all varieties has been influenced by classical music and vice versa, both in the form of direct quotes and in the form of borrowings of style, composition, and instrumentation. The average listener may be unaware of the many links between rock music and the classics. One might remember a few examples, such as Walter Murphy's chart-topping "A Fifth of Beethoven" or Eric Carmen's "All by Myself," but pass them off as interesting anomalies. However, the influence of the classics on rock music is pervasive and grows from a long line of precedents. This second supplement to Janell R. Duxbury's original 1985 discography, Rockin' the Classics and Classicizin' the Rock, brings the earlier work and first supplement up-to-date with hundreds of new entries documenting recently released or newly discovered examples of the interconnection between these musical genres. Duxbury details nearly 700 new examples of recorded rock instrumentals and songs that borrow musical themes from the classics. Variations range from contemporary renditions of complete classical works to brief classical quotes or phrases subtly incorporated into rock compositions. Duxbury also gives additional examples of recorded orchestral versions of songs originally composed and/or written by rock artists. In these examples, the musical style varies from strict classical interpretations to pop-style orchestral renditions. The second supplement then expands Duxbury's original compilation of sound recordings and live performances of rock groups performing with established orchestras and choruses, selected samples of recorded rock music that simulate baroque or classical sound/structure, examples of the manifest influence of rock on classical music, and instances of rock artists and classical artists switching roles. Lastly, this discography updates the 1985 version and the first supplement with new information, expanded details, and minor corrections to the earlier works. An extended list of selected non-rock background examples is included in several new appendixes. The Preface is updated. A general index includes the names of classical composers, rock artists and groups, orchestras, choruses, orchestra conductors, sound recording producers, and song or instrumental titles. With its incomparable scope and content, this supplement, together with Duxbury's previous discography, and its first supplement will be appreciated by students, researchers, record collectors, trivia buffs, music industry employees, and fans of rock music and the classics.
