Maui's rich history and culture are the foundation of these new, original short stories by Maui's award-winning author/playwright. Under Maui Skies, and Other Stories presents seven Maui tales in different genres set in a variety of Maui locales ranging in time from pre-contact Hawai`i to the 1960s. In The Cave of Whispering Spirits, a couple and family face the wrath of the goddess of fire, Pele, in the last eruption of Haleakala. That legend is followed by The Cruel Sun, the true story of a love affair in Old Lahaina and the demons that haunt them - alcoholism and missionaries. Under Maui Skies, the title story, is a western set in 1908 Kula and Kama`ole where an ordinary ranchworker is enlisted by the local sheriff to trail and report on the activities of an opium dealer called Albert Devil. The action changes in Aloha `Oe, E Ku`uipo (Goodbye, Sweetheart) when a money-strapped Wailuku detective takes on the case of a femme fatale. A rainbow of multiracial usual suspects is under the microscope in this island style homage to Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. A soldier in 1942 Pa`ia and Kihei previews, in a Twilight Zone world, the horrors of World War II at Guadalcanal in Aunty Becky's Tavern. Hawaiian culture and science fiction blend in An Island Beyond Hokule`a. A diaspora from a war-ravaged planet use the universal porthole of Haleakala in search of someone who will take a philosophy of aloha to their new home at the edge of the galaxy. The final story, Climbing Woman, a ghost story, tells the sad legend of a young woman who spirals into depression and eventually death - later sighted as the legendary White Lady who haunts `Iao Valley. Moniz's fresh voice and cadence captures the flavor of the islands and their history, using these traditional storytelling genres.

In his first book, "Under Maui Skies and Other Stories," Wayne Moniz wrote seven tales of his Maui home. In this new book, "Beyond the Reef: Stories of Maui in the World," the prize-winning author introduces eight new narratives. Like all his previous works, the Maui native has based these stories on the people, events, and issues of Hawaii, with the aim of preserving its rich past. This time some moolelo occur beyond the Valley Isle. The new settings - the Big Island, Oahu, California, and even Europe - are all, nevertheless, anchored in the writer's birthplace. As in his former anthology - 2010 Readers' Choice Book of the year by the Hawaii Book Publishers Association - each yarn is of a different genre: ghost story, comedy, crime, a Western, and this time, includes several new types: a tragedy, an inspirational story, a coming-of-age tale, and a sports reminiscence. Here's what critics said about his last book, "Under Maui Skies and Other Stories" "The Storyteller, writer Wayne Moniz, brings Maui's past to life." Maui Time "Under Maui Skies is one of the most engaging works of fiction to come out of Hawaiin a long time." The San Francisco Chronicle Here's what they're already saying about "Beyond the Reef: Stories of Maui in the World" "Let 'Beyond the Reef' carry you away into a treasure of stories from the talented pen of Wayne Moniz." Kumu Kelii Taua, PhD "What the world needs now is love... here are some stories of how to live aloha." Alakai Paleka, The Morning goddess, KPOA Radio "Dip your feet into Wayne's warm world of cultural tidal pools and sweet aloha. You'll want to stay awhile." Keola Beamer, singer, author, composer, slack key master Born and raised on Maui, Wayne Moniz has taught writing on all levels, the "Dean of Maui Playwrights," by the Maui News. In 2005, he received the Cades Award for Literature, Hawaii's most prestigious writing prize for his body of work that includes thirteen plays, numerous short stories, screenplays, poetry, and lyrics.

This new title from a proven author of women’s fiction (nearly 4 million units sold) will strike a chord with today’s women because of its investigation of the effects on families of the current economic difficulties. It will also appeal to the stores currently searching for more romance and women’s fiction. Carissa doesn’t know who she is anymore. She and her husband, Richard, are recent empty nesters; Richard is spending more and more time at work counseling his volatile clients and less time at home with his wife; his clients are starting to show up at the house at night causing Carissa to feel scared in her own home; and to top it all off, Carissa’s boss informs her that she’s been “let go.” She wonders where God is in all of this since He doesn’t seem to be around to protect her—and she’s already stopped trusting her husband. In the midst of her world tilting off center, she’s offered time at a hideaway on Maui. Hiding seems like the best way to respond to life’s overload, and the thought of being alone sounds like just the right balm to soothe her wounded heart. The languid Hawaiian sun, white beaches, and warm-hearted people bring respite, but meeting handsome Kai causes Carissa to toy with the idea of being romantically involved with him. Then, under a Maui moon, she looks to God for guidance and hope for the future. That’s when she discovers His hand still is on her life, and that love is closer than she ever realized.

Within this unique volume are 15 legends of Maui. Legends like: MAUI THE FISHERMAN, MAUI LIFTING THE SKY, MAUI SNARING THE SUN and twelve more captivating stories and tales from antiquity from the Polynesian people of the South Pacific. These legends are not only different from the myths of other nations, but they are unique in the character of the actions recorded. There are three centres for these legends, New Zealand in the south, Hawaii in the north, and the Tahitian group in the east. In each of these groups of islands, separated by thousands of miles, there are the same legends, told in almost the same way, and with very little variation in names and content. However, Maui's deeds rank in a higher class than most of the mighty efforts of the demi gods of other nations and races, and are usually of more utility. The Maui legends are full of helpful imaginations, which are distinctly and uniquely Polynesian in nature. Here you will find adventures from the great voyages of discovery which carry fragments and hints of wonderful deeds. The Maoris of New Zealand claim Maui as an ancestor of their most ancient tribes and class him as one of the most ancient of their gods, calling him "creator of land" and "creator of man" even sometimes "the sun himself," "the solar fire," and the "the sun god," while his mother Hina was called "the moon goddess." NOTE: MAUI (Ma-u-i, Ma-oo-e) is a Polynesian demi god. His name derives from “Mohyi” meaning "causing to: live" or "life," applied sometimes to the gods and sometimes to chiefs as "preservers and sustainers" of their followers. The Maui story probably contains a larger number of unique and ancient myths than that of any other legendary character in the mythology of any nation. They also form one of the strongest links in the mythological chain of evidence which binds the scattered inhabitants of the Pacific into one nation. They possess remarkable antiquity. Those who live on Maui and those who visit share a common bond: they don't want to be anywhere else. Some love the beaches, or the mountains, or the ocean, or the weather. Others cherish the family connections and cultural continuity the island nurtures. Many enjoy Maui's unique, friendly, fun-loving, big-hearted, active and healthful lifestyle. And everyone appreciates the island's robust diversity. The qualities that make Maui unique and universally loved are captured in the chapters that follow. There is a Maui only the sun, the stars, and the birds could see until recently: rugged cliffs, surf-fringed reefs, hidden waterfalls, and eroded mountain tops. There is a Maui seen from a walker's perspective: misty ocean coves, palm shaded beaches, dramatic overlooks, smoldering sunsets, and storybook skies vivid with rainbows. There is a nature lover's Maui: tiny insects, birds and mountain ferns, dazzling arrays of tropical flowers, as well as monk seals, great whales, and other sea life. There is Upcountry, a mountain Maui of scenic farms and ranches; and the rugged Hana Coast, where emerald rain forests meet a sapphire sea. Then there is the Maui most familiar to its longtime residents: famous local eateries, fairs, parades, and beloved island celebrities. Absolute Maui draws its inspiration from the award-winning books Maui On My Mind and Maui, The Last Hawaiian Place by Robert Wenkam both of which are now considered classics. Absolute Maui takes its title from the caliber of these images, painstakingly taken by the island s finest photographers, utilizing almost every modern-day photographic technique. The title also reminds us what Maui is, what it offers, and how lucky its residents and visitors are.
