It’s a book about the greatest battle on earth, affecting every living being for eternity. A battle so intense if we could see it, we would stand frozen in awe and wonder! Yet we remain oblivious to the forces. We float comfortably in our own definition of life, what’s good and what’s bad. Things happen to us, and our hope rises and falls based on our daily circumstances. For some, all hope is gone, and life is marginalized to despair and total depression and sadness. For others, life seems to be ok, while I remain nervous about the potential bad “stuff.” I’ve adjusted my expectations and things are fine. I really don’t have any religious interests; I’m making it work. The enemy is leaving me alone, because I’m not part of the fighting force, I’m on the sidelines. For others, my childhood had a religious upbringing, and I value the principles, or I gained an appreciation of them along my life’s path. I believe I have faith in God, and my salvation is assured, yet I continue to live my life for the most part how I want. God may not know this person, and he/she could be lost, an eternal fate terrorizing beyond imagination at the end of this life. For others, life has dealt blows, and through it, an understanding of a “higher power” and the living incarnation of Jesus Christ’s redemption has invaded the “soul” and imparted power to overcome and be at peace with everything, because God is God. He is good, and he knows me, loves me, and is taking care of me and leading me to a good place – regardless of what happens this side of eternity. My choices have changed, I want to be holy. It is called Daily Redemption, a peace that passes all understanding. As atonement leads me to be one with the Lord Jesus Christ forever – His life living in me - perfect! Amen!!!

The author has collected and shaped interviews into a book of true stories of the stunning journeys that ordinary people have made from pain to redemption. Unwasted Pain, the subtitle of the book, refers to the process of facing and distilling pain from such difficulties as abuse, hatred, crime, war and evil--and finding more peace and equilibrium (sometimes more than there was before). Besides the twenty-one stories that comprise the chapters of this book, Mary Ciofalo has also written four essays and an introduction that include more vignettes of redemption stories along with her observations about the nature and activation of redemption. She tells us what she has gleaned while compiling this book. She also includes the view of an Advaitan Swami and an Episcopalian minister, as well as those of a former warden of San Quentin Prison. This book is inspirational; and it has the potential to expand one's thinking to include the possibility of redemption to both the harmed and the harmer--in situations where one might not even conceive of mercy or forgiveness or the possibility of redemtption.

Many Americans wish to believe that the United States, founded in religious tolerance, has gradually and naturally established a secular public sphere that is equally tolerant of all religions--or none. Culture and Redemption suggests otherwise. Tracy Fessenden contends that the uneven separation of church and state in America, far from safeguarding an arena for democratic flourishing, has functioned instead to promote particular forms of religious possibility while containing, suppressing, or excluding others. At a moment when questions about the appropriate role of religion in public life have become trenchant as never before, Culture and Redemption radically challenges conventional depictions--celebratory or damning--of America's "secular" public sphere. Examining American legal cases, children's books, sermons, and polemics together with popular and classic works of literature from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries, Culture and Redemption shows how the vaunted secularization of American culture proceeds not as an inevitable by-product of modernity, but instead through concerted attempts to render dominant forms of Protestant identity continuous with democratic, civil identity. Fessenden shows this process to be thoroughly implicated, moreover, in practices of often-violent exclusion that go to the making of national culture: Indian removals, forced acculturations of religious and other minorities, internal and external colonizations, and exacting constructions of sex and gender. Her new readings of Emerson, Whitman, Melville, Stowe, Twain, Gilman, Fitzgerald, and others who address themselves to these dynamics in intricate and often unexpected ways advance a major reinterpretation of American writing.

This book discusses the use of authorship discourses and author figures in the promotion and marketing of media content, dealing with the U.S. mainstream media, including franchise film, network television, and triple-A video games. The research takes a unique approach studying ideas of authorship in promotion, diverging from extant approaches looking at the text, production, or reception. Conceptualizing authorship within the logic of media branding, the book studies the construction of ideas around creativity and the creative person in marketing and publicity content where media industries communicate with audiences. A cross-media approach allows the book to take a broad look and make comparisons across the increasingly integrated media industries. The book will be of great relevance to academics in the fields of film, television, and media studies, including postgraduate students, conducting teaching and research around authorship, media industries, and media promotion.

Have you ever wondered why some video game characters wear trousers and others don’t? Or pondered the connection between a character’s toned, muscular derrière and their level of dexterity? What about the depth of a crack, the jiggle of a cheek? When it comes to video game character designs, one of the most overlooked aspects is the buttocks. Sure, we might appreciate a nice toned butt on a character or giggle at GIFs of farts from time to time, but how often do we stop to really think about the meaning of the butt? In Things I Learned from Mario’s Butt, video game critic Laura Kate Dale brings backsides to the foreground, analysing dozens of posteriors and asking the important questions: Has Mario let himself go? Do Link’s small buttocks hold him back? When he dies, is Pac-Man eaten by his own caboose? Wedged full of original artwork by Zack Flavin, and featuring interviews with game developers and guest butt reviews from gaming favourites such as Jim Sterling, Stuart Ashen, Brentalfloss and more, this book is a deep dive into why butts are downright integral to the games we play. So, crack it open and have a cheeky look inside at some of the most interesting bottoms the world of video games has to offer.
