The Goblin Invasion Is On... ...and a wizard's work is never done! After facing a hopeless siege, an implacable foe and an impossible escape, you would think that Minalan the Spellmonger would be able to rest -- but the armies of the undead goblin shaman Sheruel (known as the Dead God to his human victims) are rolling over the western reaches of the rustic Duchy of Alshar and is headed toward the heart of the Duchy of Castal. Thousands are fleeing for their lives as hordes of goblins pour out of Boval Vale and devastate the rugged fiefs of the Alshari Wilderlands. And the super-charged shamans of the Dead God are making defending the realm almost impossible for the outnumbered Alshari country knights. While the two Dukes play feudal politics to further their own ends, the only people who seem to care about the invasion are Minalan and his outlaw warmagi friends -- and they're busy dodging agents of the sinister Royal Censorate of Magic. But if someone doesn't organize an army in northern Alshar soon, then there will be nothing to stop the armies of the divinely-powerful Dead God from conquering all five Duchies in his genocidal quest for vengeance. But things are just not that simple: he has to cope with a sexy young Shadowmage assassin who works for a mysterious spymaster, a cocky new manservant, a dysfunctional group of suddenly-powerful warmagi, the Censor General, and a bunch of whiny nobles before the Dukes will grant him the troops and money he will need -- and the Dukes have plans of their own. If Minalan the Spellmonger can't lobby the courts of Alshar and Castal to work together -- and quickly -- the hordes of the Dead God will sweep over the frontiers of both states. Worse, the mysterious Umbra veil he has erected around Boval Vale may come to imperil all Five Duchies. Minalan would rather just go home and let the Dukes handle it, but his conscience won't let him. Someone has to stop the Dead God . . . and that someone happens to be him. Beyond politics and plots, goblins and trolls, mercenaries and magic, the Soulless and the shamans, Censors and secret orders, for Minalan there is only the thought that his child is to be born in a world with such dangers, and that is something he cannot permit. It is time for the Spellmonger to pick up his mageblade, grab his witchstone, summon his allies, and go to war again . . . as a Warmage!

The final battle draws near, and the fate of men and gods hangs in the balance... Brand has defeated the army of Unferth, and the usurper lies dead. His magician, Horta, is also humbled. From the ruins of battle, Brand forges alliances and brings warring tribes together toward a single, all-important purpose. But time is running out. Nor does he have soldiers enough to face what comes. For the army of the Kar-ahn-hetep is on the move, and the gods of that warlike people march with it. Dread flies before them, and darkness falls over the land. What must follow is a battle Brand cannot win. But he will fight it anyway. Yet, unknown to him, a desperate hope exists. That spark is held by Horta, his enemy, and the magician might as easily snuff it out as flare it to life. But the will of the Dark God is bent upon him, whose only thought is to crush Brand forever... This is the final book of the Dark God Rises trilogy.

From the Author: C. S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity is the obvious inspiration for the title of this book. In that book, Lewis uses the example of a person standing in a hall that is lined on both sides by rooms: Each room represents a different Christian tradition. He wanted to get readers into the hallway and let them choose for themselves whether to enter Christianity by the door of Anglicanism, Catholicism, and so forth. Mere Christianity brilliantly focuses on what essentially all Christians agree upon; namely the Creed, the canon of the New Testament, etc. However, many of the great controversies between Protestants and Catholics are purposely not discussed. There were ecumenical reasons for avoiding topics like papal primacy, purgatory, Marian devotions, and so forth. But, by avoiding these sorts of topics, Mere Christianity can be read as Mere Protestantism. I wrote Mere Catholicism to address some of those missing topics. Even though I am both intellectually and emotionally convinced of the truth of Catholic Christianity, I am indebted to C. S. Lewis (an Anglican) for helping me better understand how Christianity offers the most compelling raison d’être. His work and I hope my own is an exploration of “faith seeking understanding,” to quote St. Anselm of Canterbury. Contents: PrefaceIntroduction: Christianity in the Third Millennium1. Umbra is a story of one woman's journey into the wilderness of her own being, a deliciously weird tale, both universal and unique, deeply disturbing, darkly funny, and altogether unforgettable. When Ohno Hoia, an amnesiac solitary seafarer, wakes up on a ship Umbra, the earth is desecrated, and humanity is moored in despair. As she navigates unknown waters for the search of land, she discovers that she's in possession of two extraordinary things: an ancient collection of seeds and a shadow of most wicked and unruly nature. After Ohno lands in a strange new world of modern-day California, she plants a garden the likes of which have not been seen since the days of Eden. As her plants' magical powers break the spell of collective apathy across North America, Ohno's vile shadow begins to threaten everything she holds dear. Through a series of mysterious coincidences and chance encounters, she realizes that the future of humanity is inextricably linked to her unremembered past, and her shadow will never stop plotting to destroy her until she asks the scariest of questions: Who am I?Even if discovering the answers kills her. Even if it already did. An explosive combo of enchanting fairy tale and piercing satire perfect for fans of Neil Gaiman, John Crowley, Kazuo Ishiguro's Buried Giant, and Lewis Carol's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Dark Woods is the fifth novel in the There Is a River saga. Abe Badoane, the dastardly evil villain of the earlier novels, turns out--unexpectedly--to be none other than Jude's tormented father. In contrast to their world of harmony and peace, evidenced in the larger community and their joyful reconciliation, other characters fare less well than the conciliated father-son. Todd Cravener, intelligent and conniving, pits himself against Cory's super athletic brother Joey, creating a deadly rivalry. In this novel, the subplots of the low-lifers and the life-embracing conquerors crisscross and eventually collide in a series of surprising and breathtaking episodes. In the words of one reader, "The protagonists inhabit an island of light in the antagonists' raging sea of turbulent darkness." Will courage, goodwill, and love enable the triumph-seekers to withstand the relentless machinations of the plotting malcontents? "No wonder Dark Woods kept me on the edge of my seat!"

A magisterial account of the interaction between the law and racial oppression in America, from colonial times to the present, this book demonstrates how the one agent that should have guaranteed equal treatment before the law--the judicial system--instead played a dominant role in enforcing the inferior position of blacks. 43 photos.
