Ulster has produced an impressive number of surgeons who have gained world-wide renown. None has been more celebrated, or more deserving of a biography than Sir Ian Fraser whose life spanned almost the whole of the 20th century. Following a brillant university career, Fraser's training occupied most of the inter-war years. As with most innovatory surgeons, his career really flourished in war-time conditions. During the Second World War, he was at the forefront of the early field trials of a drug that would benefit the whole of mankind - penecillin - first, in the crucial allied victory in North Africa and then in Italy. For the courage and skill he consistently showed during during these campaigns, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. In 1945 came his timely appointment to the surgical staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast, in which he was to serve with equal distinction until his retirement in 1966. Richard Clarke's sympathetic, insightful and not uncritical biography could only have been written by someone who was taught by Fraser and who then worked alongside him. The outcome is a fascinating, and informed overall view of Sir Ian Fraser, the surgeon, the teacher, the writer and, above all, the man.

There is a diversity of ‘ethical practices’ within medicine as an institutionalised profession as well as a need for ethical specialists both in practice as well as in institutionalised roles. This Brief offers a social perspective on medical ethics education. It discusses a range of concepts relevant to educational theory and thus provides a basic illumination of the subject. Recent research in the sociology of medical education and the social theory of Pierre Bourdieu are covered. In the end, the themes of Bourdieuan Social Theory, socio-cultural apprenticeships and the ‘characterological turn’ in medical education are draw together the context of medical ethics education.

"This...history traces the hospital from its beginnings in 1797 as the Belfast Dispensary and Fever Hospital through momentous years of development and expansion as it responded to the needs of a growing and turbulent population. The men and women whose dedication, skill and innovation have won an international reputation for the hospital are vividly described, and the inclusion of lists of the key staff of two centuries make this lavishly illustrated book a fitting celebration of their achievement." --Dust jacket.

This book provides the first detailed study of healthcare during the period of the Troubles in Northern Ireland (1968–1998). While there have been some studies of the effects of conflict in the context of Northern Ireland, to date there have been no in-depth histories of the impact of the Troubles on healthcare and the experiences of healthcare professionals. Ruth Duffy's work combines analysis of archival research and oral history interviews to reveal the widespread impact of the conflict on healthcare facilities, their staff, and patients, as well as the broader societal implications of providing services during the Troubles. The book allows the voices of those who worked on the frontline to be heard for the first time, as well as exploring important issues such as medical ethics and neutrality. It offers new and valuable insights into the cost of the Northern Ireland conflict and its legacy today.
