Either of the two dramas in this book are suitable for use as a Sunday church school Christmas program, a special Christmas season worship service (hymns may be added), or a program for a youth group or other church organization during the Advent or Christmas season. Either can be produced with simple props, and parts can either be read or recited from memory. The Tinsel Time Machine is a charming Christmas fantasy in the style of H.G. Wells. An unlikely contraption proves capable of transporting members of a disillusioned Midwestern family to other times and places at the Christmas season. Rag Doll Number Thirty-Seven tells the story of an aging couple who create and give away a homemade gift of love each Christmas season -- a rag doll, intended for someone in special need. Edward S. Long is pastor of First United Church of Christ, Hamilton, Ohio. A graduate of Elmhurst (Illinois) College and Eden Theological Seminary, he has earned a Doctor of Ministry from the latter institution. He has served as a counselor for Pastoral Counseling Service, Hamilton, Ohio; trustee for United Campus Ministry, Miami University (Ohio); and president of the Hamilton-Fairfield Ministerial Association.

This set offers two fresh, imaginative presentations that are fun to perform and will get young people excited about being in the Christmas program. The plays can be easily adapted for use by groups of any size -- lines are easy to memorize, and performance time for each is approximately 20 minutes. Bartholomew, The Clueless Shepherd blends the wonder of the nativity story, a young boy's ambition, and a gentle dose of humor into a winning presentation. It tells the touching story of a shepherd boy who initially fails to notice the amazing things happening around him in Bethlehem. But with his father's guidance, Bartholomew gradually becomes aware of the miracle of Christmas and responds to God's eternal love. The Animals? Christmas Pageant recounts the events in the manger from the point of view of the animals -- and do they have personalities with attitude! Perfect for use with middle school or junior high youth, this play has six speaking and several non-speaking roles.

Everyone knows the nativity story -- the inn, the stable, and all the rest. If your traditional Christmas pageant has become a bit stale and you want to give it new life, this collection of engaging plays is sure to fit your needs. Keith Hewitt gives the usual narrative a modern treatment by adapting characters and settings from four popular television series (Blue's Clues, CSI, Cops, and Trading Spaces) and transferring them to the events in Bethlehem. By twisting the lens a little to change the focus, these sketches tell how common people are affected by incredible events. Audiences will love these entertaining programs, and they'll have fun watching the characters as they learn a valuable lesson. All four plays are specifically designed to be produced in churches, and can be easily staged by congregations of almost any size. There are roles suitable for a range of ages from kindergarten through adult, allowing you to involve the whole congregation in the production. "Ewe's Clues" is intended primarily for younger children (although adults and older children will also enjoy it) and has a running time of approximately 30 minutes. "Cops: Bethlehem," "CSI: Bethlehem," and "Trading Spaces: Bethlehem" each have a running time of approximately 45 minutes, and are designed for older audiences (though children will get something out of them as well). Keith Hewitt is a youth leader at Wilmot United Methodist Church in Wilmot, Wisconsin, and in his "day job" is a quality analyst. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay.

Keith Hewitt is back with a second volume of cleverly developed nativity dramas in which he adapts biblical stories to popular television programs. In the same way Jesus communicated in a context that people of his time could relate to, Hewitt presents four sharp-witted takeoffs on something our culture can really relate to -- TV. The humorous yet reverent treatments of these biblical narratives will hold people's attention and breathe new life into traditional nativity texts. All four plays are specifically designed to be produced in churches, and can be easily staged by congregations of almost any size. Props are simple and easy to find. The four plays in this second volume are: "A Night for News" -- Taken from a CNN (Caesar News Network) news broadcast "Bethlehem Blues" -- A takeoff of the popular 80s police drama, Hill Street Blues "Two-And-A-Half Wise Men" -- A parody of the CBS sitcom Two-And-A-Half Men "Dirty Jobs: Bethlehem" -- An adaptation of Mike Rowe's Discovery Channel show Dirty Jobs Keith Hewitt in his new book of dramas based on the Nativity stories once again shows that he knows how to reach an audience... by taking a biblical story, wrapping a modern TV program around it, and "letting it fly." His use of parody of popular TV shows to tell the biblical stories puts a human face on some timeless truths. -- Jim Rowlette Retired Pastor Wilmot United Methodist Church Keith Hewitt is a youth leader at Wilmot United Methodist Church in Wilmot, Wisconsin, and in his "day job" is a quality analyst. In the gospel of John, the writer ends the story by stating the purpose of writing the Gospel. This purpose is recorded in verses 30 and 31 of chapter 20. Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. Based on this ending, it stands to reason that for even the other Bible stories which are included in scripture, many details have been left out because the respective writers can say so much and no more. Have you ever wondered what details might have been left out of the Christmas narrative as we know them? It is that kind of curiosity which sparked the imaginative thoughts that brought these two Christmas musicals together. The characters were normal human beings with emotions. If you think of it, Joseph would have been jealous and angry when he thought that Mary was unfaithful to him. That kind of emotion might have led to a verbal showdown between the two until the angel appeared to Joseph directly. In turn, Mary must have been pretty distraught that Joseph kept accusing her wrongly and that he continued to question her integrity. Why was he going to break off the engagement? Did he not trust and have confidence in the innocent virgin? Both Mary and Joseph would have had parents too, so how did they come into the picture? What were their immediate thoughts when news of the miracle pregnancy unfolded? There might have been uncertainty and confusion, even among the people of God. One may even assume that there may have been gossips in that society who, like some persons in this day and age, just enjoyed embellishing stories which sounded juicy. At the other end of the spectrum, one wonders what the atmosphere may have been like in the palace of Herod. Was it all anger and jealousy which prevailed, or did the raw human emotions of nervousness and anxiety come to the fore? A Dream Come True and Believe Me, I Believe depicts the Christmas narrative fully as described in the Bible. However, some of these thoughts and questions come out very clearly during the plot. In a combination of poetry and drama, music and dance, the story with the added imaginative scenes unfolds with all these elements interwoven into one continuous narrative. The overall Christian message comes out clearly and very strongly toward the end of each musical, and while the plots may differ, they both carry the underlying theme of evangelism as persons are encouraged to believe in this Jesus and give their lives to Him.

On a winter night long ago, a baby boy was born in a stable with only the animals to witness his arrival. But it wasn’t just the cows and donkeys and soft little lambs who were present. Smaller, less loved creatures were there, too: the snake, the scorpion, the cockroach, and others. Lyrically written by Eve Bunting and luminously illustrated by Wendell Minor, this beautiful book offers a unique and moving perspective on the Christmas story. It reminds us that all God’s creatures, both great and small, celebrated the arrival of the Christ child.
