It was a lovely summer morning, glorious with sunlight, sweet with the fragrance of flowers and the songs of birds. The view from the bay-window of the library of Crag Cottage, the residence of Mr. George Leland, architect and artist, was very fine, embracing, as it did, some of the most magnificent scenery on the banks of the Hudson. The house stood very high, and from that window one might look north and south over wooded mountain, hill and valley, or east upon the majestic river and its farther shore. The nearer view was of well-kept, though not extensive, grounds; a flower-garden and lawn with a winding carriage-way leading up the hill by a gradual ascent. It was a pleasant place to sit even on a sunny summer morning, for a tall tree partially shaded the window without greatly obstructing the view, and it was there the master of the house was usually to be found, at this time of day, with Evelyn, his only child, close at his side.

The Elsie Dinsmore Novels, Martha Finley, in our opinion is the author of the best Series of novels that we have seen in our forty-three years of reviewing. Written by Martha Finley, an unmarried teacher of the last century, these novels proved to be a means of conveying her deep love for Christ Jesus. She loved her Lord, she loved His Word, and this love was passed on to His sheep through the writing of by far the best and most Biblical novels you will ever read or see. Altogether there are 28 of these novels, all built around Elsie Dinsmore, her immediate family, her extended family, and her neighbors.

In 'The Two Elsies: A Sequel to Elsie at Nantucket' by Martha Finley, readers are drawn into a heartwarming tale of family, friendship, and faith. Set in the late 19th century, this book follows the lives of two young cousins, both named Elsie, as they navigate the trials and tribulations of growing up. Finley's prose is beautifully descriptive and filled with moral lessons, making it a classic example of 19th-century children's literature. The story's emphasis on Christian values and female virtue reflects the author's own religious beliefs and societal norms of the time. This sequel continues the themes introduced in 'Elsie at Nantucket,' further developing the characters and their relationships in a captivating manner. Martha Finley, a devout Christian and educator, uses her writing to instill important moral principles in her readers. Her personal experiences and religious convictions likely influenced her creation of the Elsie Dinsmore series, of which 'The Two Elsies' is a beloved installment. I recommend this book to readers interested in historical children's literature and those looking for a wholesome and uplifting story that transcends time.

Elsie is a city girl. She loves the noise of the cobbled streets of Boston. But when her mother dies and her father moves them to the faraway prairies of Nebraska, Elsie hears only the silence, and she feels alone in the wide sea of grass. Her only comfort is her canary, Timmy Tune. But when Timmy flies out the window, Elsie is forced to run after him, into the tall grass of the prairie, where she's finally able to hear the voice of the prairie-beautiful and noisy- and she begins to feel at home. Jane Yolen and David Small create a remarkable, poetic, vividly rendered book about finding one's place in the world.

While the Dinsmores, Travillas, and Raymonds spend the summer in Nantucket, Lester and Elsie Leland are called to the bedside of Lester's dying brother. His only child, Evelyn, is left in their care. Upon the Lelands' return to Ion from Nantucket, Elsie's dear old mammy, Aunt Chloe, passes away. Lulu and Evelyn become close friends, and the four families decide to spend the Christmas holidays and winter at Viamede. All the children are enrolled in Oakdale Academy as day students. Lulu, however, gets into trouble when she strikes her teacher with a book, and her stubborn refusal to submit to Mr. Dinsmore's authority is eclipsed only by the news that her father is lost at sea.
