An introduction to European history between 1914 and 1945, this text moves beyond the view that it can only be understood in terms of catastrophe, arguing that political stability and regime collapse, social progress and mass poverty, the crisis of European civilization and remarkable cultural achievements, existed alongside each other.

Writer's apprentice Lena London is happily working on a new collaboration with her idol and bestselling suspense novelist and friend Camilla Graham, but her joy is short-lived when a dark cloud descends upon the quaint town of Blue Lake, Indiana... Lena's best friend, Allison, is in a panic. On a walk in the woods by her home, Allison discovers the body of her mail carrier, an argumentative man who recently had a falling out with Allison's husband. Lena quickly realizes that Allison has nothing to worry about as the murder weapon points to a different suspect altogether: Lena's embattled boyfriend, Sam West. Sam was cleared of his wife's murder when she was found alive, and now someone is trying to make him look guilty again. Surveillance video of a break-in at his house shows a shadowy figure trying to incriminate him by stealing the weapon from his desk. Lena and Camilla work on a suspect list, but a threatening note and a violent intrusion at Graham House prove that the devious killer has decided to write them into the plot.

Based on the Legend of Loftus Hall, Ireland's most haunted house, Twisted Paths takes us deep down the inky black rabbithole of Annie and Dafydd's hexed lives. The two star-crossed lovers on a collision course orchestrated by an invisible, arcane hand. Follow their gruelling trials and hardships as their paths slowly entwine, when at last they unite their breif love sparks a fire that engulfs them both, and from the ashes...further evil arises. Reader reaction. I was so impressed by the story, it was enthralling and from the moment the tale unfurled in the Blue Light bar I was spellbound by all - the conversational engagement proffered by the author at the outset, the visceral imagery (written like a dream for a potential cinematographer!!!), the twists, the setpieces (the visit to the Hellfire Club, Dafydd onboard the ship, Dr. Blake (I could go on - all pure class!) and just the pure quality of the writing (Sid making haste from the hotel, how Loftus Hall is described, Baal padding across the bogland of the peninsula -footprints leaving a small blue flame - are just small examples of how evocative and exciting the writing is), Annie's evolution, I can honestly say, it was one of the most enjoyable books I have read - entertaining and enthralling. Seriously it's brilliant.

In Bitter Friends, Bosom Enemies, Barbara Slavin untangles the love-hate relationship between Iran and the United States that has brought the two countries to the brink of war. Slavin reveals that relations between Washington and Tehran have been riddled with contradictions for decades and details missed opportunities for reconciliation under both the Clinton and Bush administrations, including diplomatic rebuffs to Iran in Bush's first term based on the mistaken belief that the U.S. invasion of Iraq would weaken Iran's Islamic government. On e of the few reporters to interview high-profile Iranian officials, including Iran's current and last two presidents, Slavin describes all the key constituencies in Iran society from the clerics, to the Revolutionary Guards, to reformers and Iranian youth. She unveils Iran and shows it to be a country that both adores and fears the United States. Despite government propaganda that portrays the U.S. as the "Great Satan," many Iranians have come to idolize staples of American pop culture while holding on to their own traditions. The United States, on the other hand, has demonized Iran as a member of an "axis of evil" that supports terrorists and represses its own people who, in the words of U.S. officials, "deserve better." As Iran moves toward becoming a nuclear power, Slavin believes that the power brokers in Washington may be suffering from the same lack of understanding and foresight that led the U.S. into prolonged warfare in Iraq. Distrustful of each other's intentions yet longing at some level to reconcile, neither Tehran nor Washington knows how this story will end. Anyone interested in understanding the dynamics of this pivotal international relationship will find Bitter Friends, Bosom Enemies a crucial and compelling read.
