Twins Talk is an ethnographic study of identical twins in the United States, a study unique in that it considers what twins have to say about themselves, instead of what researchers have written about them. It presents, in the first person, the grounded and practical experiences of twins as they engage, both individually and together, the “who am I” and “who are we” questions of life. Here, the twins themselves are the stars. Dona Lee Davis conducted conversational interviews with twenty-two sets of identical twins attending the Twins Days Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio, the largest such gathering in the world. Lively and often opinionated, each twin comes through as a whole person who at the same time maintains a special bond that the vast majority of people will never experience. The study provides a distinctive and enlightening insider’s challenge to the nature/nurture debates that dominate contemporary research on twins. The author, herself an identical twin, draws on aspects of her own life to inform her analysis of the data throughout the text. Each chapter addresses a different theme from multiple viewpoints, including those of popular science writers, scientific researchers, and singletons, as well as those of the twins themselves.

An updated edition of this user-friendly guide to having and parenting more than one baby/toddler at the same time Each author of this book had the same thought upon being told she was having twins, once she recovered from the shock: buy a book that explains what to expect in order to get organized and to prepare emotionally and physically for the anticipated upheaval to her life. When they couldn't find such a text, they decided to write it themselves. Based on extensive research as well as their own and other twin parents' experiences of pregnancy, birth, and twin toddlers, Katrina and Louise offer sound practical advice that is backed up by medical practitioners and health professionals where relevant. Detailed information with user-friendly explanations of medical jargon is peppered with amusing and moving stories of catastrophe, chaos, and coping. There are at-a-glance hints and survival tips at the end of each chapter and easy-reference tables of information throughout. The number of multiple births is rapidly increasing due to IVF and the older age range of new mothers. More people are having twins (or multiples) than ever before. This is the book they have to have.

The cultural fantasy of twins imagines them as physically and behaviorally identical. Media portrayals consistently offer the spectacle of twins who share an insular closeness and perform a supposed alikeness--standing side by side, speaking and acting in unison. Treating twinship as a cultural phenomenon, this first comprehensive study of twins in American literature and popular culture examines the historical narrative--within the discourses of experimentation, aberrance and eugenics--and how it has shaped their representations in the 20th and 21st centuries.
