Excerpt from Twenty-Sixth Annual Report of the Chief Inspector of Mines to the Governor of the State of Ohio for the Fiscal Year 1900 The names of the counties containing mines where machines were in use for the year 1900 will be found in the preceding table, the total number being fourteen. Instead of seventy-four machine mines, the number in 1899, we find that number increased by fourteen in 1900, making a total of eighty - eight, the use of machines having been abolished by five of the mines which used them in the year 1899. During the year the machine mines were increased by the addition to the list of the following: In Athens county, Half Moon, Daleton Number Two, Jobs Number Seventeen and Kimberly; Belmont Number Two in Belmont County; Huff Run in Carroll County; Old Orchard, Lit tle Kate and Black Top in Guernsey county; Columbus in Hocking county; Springfield in Jackson county; Conners Number One and Two and Walnut Hill in Jefferson county; Glenwood in Noble county Number Twenty and Number Five in Perry County; Krause Number Four in Stark county; Thompson Run East, and Thompson Run West in Tuscarawas county. 1 The five mines in which the use of machines were discontinued are Somers Number Five in Carroll county, Guernsey and Cambridge in Guernsey county, Silver Run in Meigs county and New Pittsburg Number Nine which is now worked in connection with Number Eight in Hocking county. By noticing the table it will be observed that the number of electric machines in use in 1900 were three hundred and twenty-two, an ia crease of eighty-six over the number used in 1899, while in 1898 the number was but forty-two less than in the year 1899. But as the electric machines increase those depending upon compressed air correspondingly decrease in number. In 1898 there were in use fifty-eight compressed air machines; in 1899, forty-four, while in 1900 there were but forty, although during this time the number of machines in use in the mines was gradually increasing. In 1900 there were forty mines in which were used a total of fifty electric motors for hauling coal as compared with twenty-five mines using twenty-eight in the year 1899.
