Excerpt from Twentieth Century Jamaica NO book on Jamaica, written with intimate knowledge of the country and its people, has appeared for twenty years. Sir Sydney Olivier's White Capital and Coloured Labour does not pretend to treat of Jamaica only, and is in any case con cerned mainly with the economic and political aspects of West Indian life. It is the best book of its kind on the subject, though now and then I have found myself obliged to disagree slightly with some of its conclusions. Mr Archibald Colquhoun is another writer who (in Greater America) has surveyed the West Indian question; but he has done so from what may be called the international point of view. No abler work on the future of America in the Caribbean Sea has been issued since Greater America was published; but though the author devotes a couple of chapters to Cuba, on Jamaica he writes but a sentence or two. When we forget, we run the risk if reinventing the wheel. Jamaica in the 21st Century: Revisiting the First Decade is a challenge and a reminder, lest we forget what ground has been covered in Jamaica’s social, political and religious life, particularly at the onset of the 21st century. Trawling through public discourse and debates in Jamaica, the book distils and surfaces the main issues that captured the attention of the public: gambling, homosexuality and human sexuality, education, crime, violence, the church and politics, to name a few. Many of the issues that preoccupy us at this time are issues that have been addressed before. It might be of use to familiarise ourselves with the earlier discussion. This book then is a sort of archaeological and socio-historical enterprise, designed to aid memory and, if possible, to help us see the progress we have made and avoid reinvention of the wheel.

Victorian Jamaica explores the extraordinary surviving archive of visual representation and material objects to provide a comprehensive account of Jamaican society during Queen Victoria's reign over the British Empire, from 1837 to 1901. In their analyses of material ranging from photographs of plantation laborers and landscape paintings to cricket team photographs, furniture, and architecture, as well as a wide range of texts, the contributors trace the relationship between black Jamaicans and colonial institutions; contextualize race within ritual and performance; and outline how material and visual culture helped shape the complex politics of colonial society. By narrating Victorian history from a Caribbean perspective, this richly illustrated volume—featuring 270 full-color images—offers a complex and nuanced portrait of Jamaica that expands our understanding of the wider history of the British Empire and Atlantic world during this period. "Jamaica's rich history has been the subject of many books, articles and papers. This collection of eighteen original essays considers aspects of Jamaican history not covered in more general histories of the island, and illluminates more recent developments in Jamaican and West Indian history." "Unique in its interdisciplinary approach, the collection emphasizes the relevance of history to everyday life and the development of a national identity, culture and economy. The essays are organized in three sections: Historiography and Sources; Society, Culture and Heritage; and Economy, Labour and Politics, with contributions from scholars in the Departments of History, Literatures in English and Political Sciences and from the Main Library, University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica." -- Book Jacket.
