Excerpt from Twelve Months With the Eighth Massachusetts Infantry in the Service of the United States It is a habit with the citizens of old Essex, one of the pioneer counties of the grand old Commonwealth of Massachusetts, to point with pride to the fact that since the earliest days of the settlement, she was ever ready to take up arms at the country's call, and her sons were always found ready and willing to go forth to do battle for what they believed to be the right. The record of her soldiers and sailors is a splendid one, and her sons have nobly represented her on land and on sea. It is perhaps a far cry from the early days of the settlement to the opening of hostilities in the last conflict at arms in which the men of the county figured. In the earlier events the hazards of warfare were perhaps more, but on the other hand, in those days it was necessary for all men able to handle a gun to fight, while in the recent clash at arms the men who answered their country's call volunteered their services, seeking the privilege of bearing arms rather than having the duty forced upon them. Honor to them all, not only for "what they did, but all they dared." Massachusetts has furnished her full quota of men at every call of the country. Old Essex has given her share, and as one of the Essex Regiments, the Eighth has figured on several occasions. This work presents the details of the part played in the Spanish-American War by the Eighth Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry. It was a peacetime regiment of infantry. The writer delivered some unknown facts about what these soldiers went through, acknowledging their hard work and courage. The 1898 conflict between the United States and Spain ended Spanish colonial rule in the Americas and resulted in U.S. possession of western Pacific and Latin America territories. The call to arms in this situation did not come unexpectedly. For a few months, it was evident to all the close observers of national affairs that a conflict was almost unavoidable. The government placed itself in a position to allow the country to acquit itself creditably when the time of the clash came. The eighth regiment showed great technique and bravery during those tumultuous circumstances.

Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Nineteenth Massachusetts Regiment For thirty-four years I have waited patiently for some one to Write a history of the 19th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, but fearing that it may never be accomplished, I have concluded to send out this story. I do not dignify it by calling it a history. It is simply a soldier's story, told by one of the boys. Most of it is written from memory. The account of prison life is taken from an imperfect diary, kept by the writer while a prisoner of war. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
