An analytical method is presented for obtaining turbulent temperature recovery factors for a thermally insulated surface in supersonic flow. The method is an extension of Squire's analysis for incompressible flow. The boundary layer velocity profile is represented by a power law and a similarity is postulated for squared-velocity the static-temperature-difference profiles.

A good understanding of turbulent compressible flows is essential to the design and operation of high-speed vehicles. Such flows occur, for example, in the external flow over the surfaces of supersonic aircraft, and in the internal flow through the engines. Our ability to predict the aerodynamic lift, drag, propulsion and maneuverability of high-speed vehicles is crucially dependent on our knowledge of turbulent shear layers, and our understanding of their behavior in the presence of shock waves and regions of changing pressure. Turbulent Shear Layers in Supersonic Flow provides a comprehensive introduction to the field, and helps provide a basis for future work in this area. Wherever possible we use the available experimental work, and the results from numerical simulations to illustrate and develop a physical understanding of turbulent compressible flows.

A theoretical investigation of the pressure distributions and drag characteristics was made for forward facing steps in turbulent flow at supersonic speeds. An approximate solution technique proposed by Uebelhack has been modified and extended to obtain a more consistent numerical procedure. A comparison of theoretical calculations with experimental data generally indicated good agreement over the experimentally available range of ratios of step height to boundary layer thickness from 7 to 0.05.

Some results are described of fundamental research conducted on various flow separation phenomena in two-dimensional streams. Experimental and theoretical results are described for the pressure rise across a reattachment region, and for the Reynolds number dependence of the pressure rise to a separation point. Observations are made throughout of the location of transition relative to reattachment and to separation, since this relative location turned out to be the dominant variable investigated.
